We get lots of calls asking what can be done with the baby animals they find. Nine times out of ten the answer is to leave them alone. This website has great information on what to do, and has a link to a list of licensed wildlife rehabilitators if the baby you find is actually in need of help.

It is common in the spring and summer to find baby animals that appear to be left alone in the wild.

We used to only worry about ticks up north or on the western side of Michigan, but now they are everywhere and we are seeing more and more Lyme positive dogs, as well as other tick borne diseases. Make sure your dog is on a monthly flea and tick preventative, and pet parents should wear a tick repellent and check themselves over as well.

Tick-borne Illnesses are present in Livingston Co. There is a known risk of Lyme disease. Ticks can also carry Tularemia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, & anaplasmosis. Tick bites may cause Alpha-gal syndrome, a red-meat allergy ☹️ Use insect repellent, wear protective clothes, & be aware!

A Mother’s Day Memory from Dr. McAllister.

Clients brought in a cat for an exam in preparation for her to have an ovariohysterectomy (spay). She was a stray that had showed up at their house. She was very friendly, so they took her in. The following day she left, and returned a short time later carrying a small kitten in her mouth. The family figured she checked them out first to see it would be a good home, then went back and got her kitten. The cat and kitten stayed. The mother cat nursed the kitten for a few more weeks, then gradually weaned her. The new owners wanted to get her spayed before there was any chance of her getting pregnant again. When I examined the adult cat, lo and behold, she was actually a neutered male cat. Honestly. The owners couldn’t believe it. There is no way to know how this neutered male cat came to be with the kitten, but we had fun conjecturing possible scenarios. I like to think the adult cat was just strolling around, minding his own business, when he heard a kitten crying, and so he investigated. Finding the kitten on its own and vulnerable, he took care of it. I shared the story of these two cats for a Mother’s Day children’s sermon. The lessons I took from them were: 1. We should help those in need whenever possible. 2. Sometimes we are capable of much more than anyone would expect. 3. It isn’t necessary to be female to be nurturing and mothering. 4. Family can be created as well as being born into.
