The Hunter Park GardenHouse, a project of Allen Neighborhood Center, serves as a demonstration site and hub for year-round garden education, where neighbors volunteer to grow food, flowers, and community, and youth develop job and life skills in service to the neighborhood. Since 2008, the Hunter Park GardenHouse has empowered neighbors to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food to better their health

and become better connected with the community. Our current programs include:

Garden Education Workshops & Services
Gardening Workshops- a full menu of year-round gardening workshop options. Urban Gardener Certification Course, a multi-session course teaching a variety of skills including planting food crops, designing home gardens, seed starting, composting, and soil science. GardenHouse Products
In effort to become financially sustainable, we are expanding our selection of products and services for sale, in which money raised will benefit our charitable programs, allowing us to provide services and programs for neighbors who can’t afford to pay. Our main annual fundraiser include a spring plant sale of vegetable and herb starts, a fall native plant sale, and regular produce sales through the Allen Neighborhood Center’s Veggie Box program. Growing Food
We grow and sell produce through a Multi-Season, multi-grower CSA- The Allen Neighborhood a Center Veggie Box. Youth Programs
Take Root Garden Club- a youth program for ages 5-10, focusing on nutrition and fitness education through gardening. Youth Service Corps- a job and life skills training program for youth ages 11-17, in which youth participate in service-learning projects focusing on food access: Garden-in-a-Box, Edible Park, Park Cart, and Fruit Tree Project.

Seed Keeping Time!!!!

Seed keeping in the fall is an essential practice for sustainable gardening and food sovereignty. As plants complete their life cycle, fall offers the perfect opportunity to harvest and save seeds from the strongest, most productive, and disease-resistant varieties. This not only preserves the unique genetics adapted to your local environment but also reduces dependence on commercial seed sources. By drying, labeling, and properly storing seeds during the cooler months, gardeners ensure a healthy, diverse supply for the next growing season. Seed keeping is more than a practical task—it’s an act of resilience, honoring the cycle of growth and renewal while carrying forward the wisdom and abundance of each harvest.

🍓Exciting things are growing at Hunter Park GardenHouse!

Last Thursday, our GardenHouse Team — alongside some amazing volunteers — spent the day thinning out and relocating strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries in the back area of Edible Park.

We’re transforming this space into a **berry-picking experience** for next year! Soon, visitors will be able to stroll through the garden and enjoy fresh, homegrown berries right from the patch.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this vision come to life!

As summer gently winds down, our hearts are full of gratitude and reflection.
The GardenHouse team wants to extend a deep, heartfelt thank you to the Eastside and the entire Lansing community. Your support, enthusiasm, and love for what we’re building together at Hunter Park GardenHouse have meant more than words can express.

Through hot days and long hours in the sun, your presence — whether stopping by to chat, volunteering with us, asking questions, or simply cheering us on — has kept us going. We see you, we appreciate you, and we’re honored to grow alongside you.

As the seasons shift and colder months approach, please don’t forget about us — the mission continues. We’re committed to providing fresh produce, sharing farming education, and cultivating community even when the skies turn gray.

We’d love your input moving forward:

What would you like to see in Edible Park next spring? (new crops, layout ideas, features, anything!)

What types of workshops or learning events interest you? (seed-starting, permaculture, winter gardening, cooking with harvest, composting, etc.)

Your ideas shape this space. Let’s keep growing — together — all year round.

This year, the GardenHouse team has accomplished so much, and I couldn’t be prouder! Together we’ve farmed the acre-plus of land with care and dedication, growing food and opportunities for our community. Beyond the fields, we’ve truly deepened our connection with the Eastside neighborhood—building relationships, sharing knowledge, and creating a welcoming space where everyone feels included. The hard work, teamwork, and heart each person has poured into this season is inspiring, and it shows in both the harvest and the strong bonds we’ve cultivated.
