Driftless Humane Society

Driftless Humane Society The Driftless Humane Society is committed to providing humane care and treatment for dogs and cats, We are a private, non--profit shelter for dogs and cats.

We are a "no-kill' shelter, which means we will never euthanize an animal to make room for more. We are entirely dependent upon donations to operate our facility and appreciate each and every donor and donation. We are committed to the promotion of the compassionate and appropriate treatment of animals throughout Vernon County and the State of Wisconsin.

National Dog Month is dedicated to our lovely canine companions across the world. Since dogs are the most common pets in the world, it is no wonder we have countless holidays celebrating their existence and their impact on human lives. These lovely creatures make our days better and show us unconditional love.

"For pet parents of adopted shelter pets, it’s a fun way to celebrate their four-legged favorites with the larger rescue pet adoption community. Every candle on a pet-safe treat is part of a larger story about pet placement success—and one that breaks ugly, false stigmas against adopting pets from shelters." - Companion Pet Magazine

Plum and Magenta came to DHS along with another one of our available cats, Red, as shelter transfers, where they had received them as part of a hoarding situation. They are all pretty social and fun-loving. They seem to enjoy each other's company and want to lie with each other and be spunky with toys.

Magenta is very chatty and likes to rub your legs as you walk. She is very goofy and loves to play with toys. She likes to climb into your lap and lick your face, no doubt seeing what you've eaten for lunch!

Plum is outgoing and likes to see what everyone is doing all the time. She will make a great snuggle buddy and companion. She does seem happier when she is with her friend Magenta.

Our Story

We are the Driftless Humane Society, License #466290, located in Viroqua, Wisconsin. We are dedicated to rescuing, returning and re-homing cats and dogs in the community. Our mission is to rescue, our dream is one day we won’t have to.

We are a no-kill shelter. Unfortunately, circumstances sometimes dictate euthanization of an animal in the event of serious illness or injury or extreme behavioral disorders. We do not euthanize due to overcrowding, ever.

We are not funded by any national organization, nor are we supported by Vernon County. Our operations are funded solely through adoptions, donations and contracts with individual municipalities. We continually operate in the red .... please consider a donation. It’s easy - simply click on the “Learn More” button on our page. This will take you to our website, scroll down to the bottom for the “donate” button.

See our adoptable dogs and cats at Petfinder.com, or stop by during our open hours to visit.
