PFS does not support or condone pig scramble events, they are ridiculously unnecessary and cruel. A local group has a petition and organizes protests for the scramble at the Shenandoah county, VA fair. Clarke county, VA also holds these horrible events in conjunction with their fair in a couple days.

Here at PFS, all exploitation and cruelty to us is heartbreaking, however the plight of the Cornish Cross chicken really tears at your heart strings. This breed was created by the meat industry less than 90 years ago to get as large as possible as quickly as possible, being slaughtered at 6-8 weeks while still biologically immature. Roosters like our friend here never get the chance to know the joy of crowing. They continually suffer genetic and obesity related chronic health problems from heart failure to broken legs and feet as their bodies can't handle the unnatural weight. When visiting you'll frequently see one or more with foot bandages from surgery as we fight to keep them mobile and pain free. Bred with low feather density to make it more cost effective to process their bodies after slaughter, they are susceptible to cold in winter and yet they can't tolerate the heat of summer due to their size. All of this was done to them without caring about their quality of life. The only thought was greed and impatience. He's a special lucky one as he was rescued and spared the short life in an overcrowded, dark and dirty barn. He experiences the outdoors and grass every day. Together we can end this cruelty and unnecessary suffering by speaking out on their behalf and by making changes to what we eat and wear to not support cruelty.

Wicket is back at the sanctuary after having spent Monday at the avian vet clinic and underwent eye surgery. The surgery went well however it will be several weeks before we know if it was successful. The surgery was a medical intervention to attempt to save her left eye and vision. If the surgery should be unsuccessful she may need to have an additional surgery to amputate her eye to avoid the eyeball dying and causing an infection that would be life threatening. The surgery was $746. In two weeks she'll have a follow up appointment that'll run about $250 and the eye removal surgery will run around $1,000. Worse case scenario she completely loses vision in one eye but otherwise will be a happy and healthy little ewok er I mean bantam silkie hen 😂. That's a little miracle considering the rough shape she was in when rescued! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated towards her medical care, you are heroes!! 🎉

Wicket, a silkie hen and recent addition to our rescue family, has been confronting substantial health challenges since her initial rescue, where she was found in a severely compromised state of malnutrition, illness, and neglect. She subsequently received treatment for parasites, cleaning ,a beak trim to enable proper eating, and antibiotics for her upper respiratory infection. However, upon failure of the initial antibiotic treatment to yield improvement, she underwent evaluation by an avian veterinarian yesterday, who confirmed the URI diagnosis and prescribed an alternative antibiotic regimen, accompanied by a mild analgesic. Furthermore, the veterinarian determined that surgical intervention would be necessary to preserve her vision, with the procedure scheduled for Monday afternoon, at an estimated cost of $725-$1,000 for ophthalmological surgery. This sweet little hen is in dire need of positive outcomes, and as such, we are actively pursuing all available medical interventions. Her presence during the drive to and from the clinic proved delightful, and her reassuring demeanor greatly alleviated the stress associated with navigating severe thunderstorms during the hour-and-a-half journey to Fairfax, VA. Your gift of support for Wicket's medical care is greatly appreciated, our mission of rescuing animals from cruelty is only possible thanks to your generosity!
