Dr. Christopher Gargamelli Elected to AVMA House Advisory Committee

Connecticut’s own Dr. Christopher Gargamelli was elected to the AVMA House Advisory Committee. The House Advisory Committee (HAC) consists of seven members elected by the House of Delegates (HOD). This committee advises and makes recommendations to the House of Delegates and Board of Directors, and reviews and approves the credentials of candidates for president, president-elect, vice president, councils, and the House Advisory Committee. There were six candidates for three positions on the HAC. Chris will bring value to the HAC with over 20 years in veterinary practice, including experience in ER and disaster medicine, academia, and industry. He was previously the chair of the AVMA Political Action Committee, AVMA Council on Veterinary Service, and Model Veterinary Practice Act Revision Working Group. He is a Past-President of the CVMA and currently serves as our delegate to the HOD.

Drs. Chris Gargamelli and Mark Albin represented Connecticut at the AVMA House of Delegates meeting, held July 17–18 in Washington, DC, alongside the AVMA Convention.

During the legislative fly-in, they and Connecticut veterinary students met with congressional offices to discuss AVMA priorities, including continued veterinary use of xylazine and support for the Rural Veterinary Workforce Act.

The House debated and approved updates to seven policies, including pediatric sterilization, sow housing, declawing, and workplace safety.

Dr. Jennifer Quammen was elected AVMA President-Elect. Dr. Gargamelli was elected to the House Advisory Committee, and Dr. Michael Bailey was installed as AVMA President.

During this year's legislative session, CVMA worked on several issues that affected the practice of veterinary medicine in our state.

CVMA learned a couple of years ago that in Connecticut, veterinarians legally could not delegate the dispensing of prescription medications. Dispensing means counting, labeling, and handing medication to the client. After two years of hard work, what is always been common practice is now legal. CVMA's advocacy has resulted in the ability of individuals, other than licensed veterinarians, to dispense prescription medications

Other legislative issues included: a ban on declawing cats, a requirement for dog licensing every three years, and a bill intended to provide information to pet owners from the Department of Public Health during and following an agency investigation into allegations of wrongdoing by a veterinarian toward such pet. These three initiatives did not advance out of committee following CVMA testimony.
