Casey with Lightshine is a gifted writer and captures so much of what we do as a Wind River Indian Reservation rescue. The rescue work we do is hard, time consuming. Can be heartbreaking and exhausting.
LightShine Canine: A Rez Dog Rescue summed up the work that many of us do.... Pine Ridge Reservation includes some of the poorest counties in the nation.
To those who say…."You should be helping the people on Pine Ridge". Let me say with great love and a desire for you to have a teaching moment…for you to understand that things aren't always exactly as they appear...
You see a picture of a rescued Reservation dog…that dog doesn't just land in our van….For that to happen…
A Lakota grandmother called us about a skinny dog her grandson has seen around and he is worried that it is sick and community members are threatening to kill it if it does not stay out of the garbage.
A Tribal member made arrangements to go by the grandmother's house and get the dog…she is struggling in her sobriety and being involved in removing this sweet and starving dog gave her something to feel proud of.
Another Community member was given a grocery store voucher for assisting in getting this dog from one side of the Reservation to the other….he was able to feed his family that night.
The young boy told the kids at school that he helped get the skinny dog to safety…his friends said they would like to do something like that.
The animal-loving Oglala Sioux Tribal police officer did not have to go through the hated task of shooting a dog.
The Grandmother was relieved and glad her grandson showed such compassion…she has always told him that dogs were living, breathing creatures with feelings.
The young mother across the street now has our number and will tell us when we can get the puppies she has and get mama spayed.
So dear ones….who judge things on face value…please open your heart and open your mind…
Helping the Dogs is helping the People. They share the same sacred Earth. You can not help one without helping the other.
