I've been trying to note one of the hardest thing about pet sitting and it comes down to 2 things for me so far:
#1 is when the pet becomes ill, often suddenly, while in my care and I have to communicate with the pet owners who believe their pet is fine. Often, illness in pets does happen quickly and can go downhill quickly. It can be hard to explain the sudden downward spiral without seeming over anxious. In 2 such cases, I needed to insist we do something about the pet and sadly, in one case, a cat needed to be put down. He had a stroke and his legs were not working. The other case, we're still waiting for answers now the pet owners are home. In these 2 cases it was a cat and a dog, but I know bunnies can become sick on the fly.
#2 is when the pet suddenly becomes ill right after I am done and then the pet owners are in contact with me about what happened, did I notice certain issues, did they seem lethargic or did they hide? I've had this happen with a bunny (GI stasis that did resolve after an overnight in the ER and lots of vet bills later) and a cat, that was ill but became worse when her people came home and ultimately had to be put down.

I will say this: even though I love my VIP clients and they generally respond well to me, I know every pet wants its owners back as soon as possible and I can only do my best.

It's important to keep these things in mind for pet owner and pet caretaker.

I brought a VIP to a local Port of Redwood City weekly event, Rock the Dock, and after watching me with my dog client, a lady responded how lucky that dog was. I explained that if my dog clients are keen to attend such an awesome event (like several are), I am happy to accommodate, making sure they have a comfy pad to sit on, not too much sun, loads of water and we stay far from the loud music while still enjoying the scene.
This client asked if I care for cats (of course, and bunnies and chickens and a few horses) and could I watch her cat. I live in Redwood City and it wouldn't be reasonable price for a daily visit to her location (14 miles away). I said she might try Nextdoor or Rover to see someone more local to her. She told me a few horror stories about sitters from Rover, including an extreme case where a dog died due to the poor care of a sitter from there.
I have heard a few bad stories, in particular homes where there are cameras, and the client can see the limited time spent with their baby.
I'm sure there are a few times where I fell short of the target 30 minutes for cats or hour for dogs, but I usually make it up. I bond with my VIP's, I talk with them, I joke with them.
What is your experience?

I haven't posted in a while, been super busy with dogs and cats and bunnies. I will post pics soon.
Is it a sign of a true pet parent that you struggle to find exactly the right dog bed, bunny habitat, or cat scratching house to replace the last one?
I've been struggling for weeks looking at options. I know that my Rocket loves to claw things (my things) to shreds and I want to find the perfect cat house to take on the clawing and provide him with something interesting.
He's had something like this - and has nearly clawed all the cardboard on the inside bottom.... so what's next?
Do I need help? This decision should be easy!

I understand that this time of year hundreds, maybe thousands of bunnies may be given as a gift to commemorate "Easter" and this time of renewal and rebirth. Thousand and maybe hundreds of thousands of bunnies then are dumped in unnamed places adding to the volume of overpopulation and suffering of domestic bunnies in the wild.
Bunnies have a double reproductive system meaning they can be pregnant and get pregnant and their bodies tell them to propagate (it is only us that find a way around this).
Please do not add to the suffering of wildlife and the few angels working to rescue, spay and neuter, and rehome these bunnies. Obviously, there are more bunnies than rescue groups.
Let's wise up and give a chocolate bunny instead, chocolate kitty, chocolate puppy instead.
