Grocery shopping is done, turkeys are thawing, and we're already making a game plan for our Thanksgiving plates. This month we've been sharing tips and tricks for getting your pets and guests ready for a fun and safe Thanksgiving gathering, and now it's time for our last pre-party check! Here are some last minute things to consider as you get ready for your party:

- Plan for some decompression before the party - Take a nice long sniffari walk and have a special Thanksgiving lick mat ready to go before guests start to arrive. Sniffing, licking, chewing, etc. all help your dog use some mental energy.

- Make sure the important areas are blocked off - Most dogs are more than willing to sneak a bite or two (or a whole turkey) if the opportunity arises. Baby gates or other physical barriers can be a helpful way to make sure our pups can't get into anything they aren't supposed to. While Thanksgiving has lots of tasty foods for humans, many ingredients aren't great for dogs like onions, sugar substitutes, and cooked bones.

- Have designated eyes on dog - Holidays can get really busy especially if you are hosting. It can be helpful to assign a responsible adult as the designated dog watcher. This person can be responsible for making sure the dog isn't causing mischief, watching pet-child interactions, and monitoring to see if the dog needs a rest or a potty break.

We hope you have an amazing Thanksgiving! If you have any other go to party tips or tricks, let us know in the comments!

Welcome back to another Dog Talk Tuesday! This month we are giving tips and tricks for successful visits from family and friends around the holidays. Today's topic: How to Train Your Guests! Unfortunately, guests tend to get offended when we wave turkey in front of their nose to get their attention🤷‍♀️It can sometimes help to send out a friendly "pet-iquette" guide in advance to make sure everyone is on the same page. Here are some of the things we would think about including:

1. Guidance for entering the house - Think through any challenges that might occur when someone arrives. It may be helpful to have someone send a text when they arrive so that you can help at the door to make sure that your dog doesn't bolt or get too excited and knock someone over. Remind your guests of your training goals (ex. We're working on jumping so please don't pet them if they jump on you.)

2. Give some tips for the little ones - Make sure little guests know not to climb on, pull on, hug, or chase the dogs. It is important to not leave pets and children unsupervised.

3. Ask guests to let the dog approach first - Some dogs may need some time to warm up before interacting. Guests should avoid reaching over the dog's head, bending over them, and putting their face near the dogs face. Help your guests notice if your dog doesn't want to be interacted with. Look for turning their head away from the person, lip licking, freezing/stiffening, leaning away, lowering their head, tucking their tail, or moving out of reach.

4. Make sure guests know where the dog's "safe zones" are - last week we talked about making a safe place for our dog to rest when they are peopled out (Check out that post if you missed it!) Make sure your guests know that your dog is off limits when in that space. In general, best practice would be to make sure your dog isn't messed with while resting regardless of where they are.

5. Remind guests to keep things out of reach - Dogs love to sniff around and find fun stuff. Remind guests to keep food, bags, coats, etc. out of the dog's reach.

What are your "pet-iquette" tips for guests?
