Meet Romona!
Nickname: Romy | Breed: Rottie/Hound Mix | Age: 3 Years |

Ramona’s journey to safety was anything but simple. Injured and scared, she had to be trapped just to get her safely to a rural North Carolina shelter. Her front leg had suffered severe, untreated trauma, and she was unable to bear weight on it. Our veterinary team discovered extensive nerve damage, and amputation was the only option.

Now fully healed, Romy is thriving—and believe it or not, she actually moves better on three legs than she ever did before!

She walks well on a leash, is good with cats, enjoys the company of other dogs, and appears to be house-trained. She’s quiet, smart, and has adapted beautifully to life at the rescue.

Ramona can be a bit fearful and anxious with new situations or unfamiliar people—but please don’t let that stop you from meeting her. With a little patience, kindness and a few treats, Romy opens up and will become your most loyal and loving companion.

Meet Zoe & Chase – A Pair of Sweet, Resilient Seniors Looking for a Soft Place to Land (Together or Separate)

Zoe and Chase are two gentle souls who have lived long lives and now just need a quiet, loving home to spend their golden years. While they came from different beginnings, they’ve found comfort in each other’s presence—and would be just as happy placed together or separately.

Zoe is a 12-year-old Maltese who is both blind and hearing-impaired. She has a chronic skin condition that has greatly improved with weekly medicated baths (which she tolerates like a champ!) and daily eye drops. Her recent bloodwork was impressive—this girl may be older, but she’s still got strength in her. Zoe was surrendered to a local shelter in an overnight drop-off cage with a note explaining that her owners could no longer care for her. Despite it all, she’s still trusting, calm, and full of love.

Chase is a 14-year-old Shih Tzu, also blind, who was found as a stray in rough shape, wearing a collar that simply read “Chase.” No one ever came looking for him. Despite his tough past, Chase is a sweet and friendly boy who enjoys cozy naps and good meals. Like Zoe, he’s proven to be healthy for his age and has a big heart ready to give.

These two are the definition of mellow. They have wonderful appetites, get along beautifully with other dogs and cats, and are mostly house-trained, though occasional accidents may happen due to age. They don’t require much—just a warm bed, a gentle hand, and a little patience.

Because of their blindness, a fenced yard is ideal, or a home where they won't be left unattended outdoors.

They don’t need to stay together, but they’ve recently been seen sharing the same bed at the rescue—sweet proof that companionship can grow even late in life.

Whether you open your heart to one or both, Zoe and Chase are simply looking for someone to give them comfort, safety, and love for however long they have left.

Quick Mazel update!

She is doing GREAT!

She has gained over 3 pounds since we rescued her from the brink of death. She is now 9.8 lbs!

She is eating like a champ and is full of energy and affection ❤️🥰

We hope to be able to continue her regular vetting soon (spay), once she gets the “all clear” from her internal medicine specialist.

Lexi Gets the Gift of Sight – and a New Beginning! 👁️🐾

Lexi- a 3 year old, 43 lb, boxer/hound mix, was heartbreakingly surrendered to a shelter after she suddenly lost her vision. But her luck turned around when she came into our care — and last week, she received the incredible gift of restored eyesight through cataract removal surgery!

Thanks to your support, Lexi can now see the world again — and she's ready for a brand-new chapter. 💛

Lexi seems to enjoy the company of most other dogs that can handle her playful energy . Her bestie at the rescue is Daisy, the Husky mix. Lexi does great in a crate, and is a good traveler.

This sweet, resilient girl is now available for adoption and looking for a loving home to start her next adventure. She's proof that hope and healing are possible.

Cataract surgery is extensive and expensive ($7,000 +!), but restoring her sight was truly priceless. Please consider a donation to help cover the cost of Lexi’s care and support more dogs like her.

A Heartfelt Thank You!

Our annual “A Toast to Pets with Disabilities” fundraiser was held last Saturday, June 21, at Bayview Hall in Chesapeake Beach, MD — and what a truly wonderful evening it was for the rescue!

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made this night such a success — from those who attended, volunteered their time (both in preparation and on the night of), donated items, and participated in our live and silent auctions, to our generous sponsors.

A special thank you goes out to those who traveled near and far to join us. Your effort and dedication mean the world to us and to the animals we serve.

The Dueling Pianos definitely brought an extra spark to the evening — it was so much fun for many of our guests! We always love trying new and exciting ways to spice things up and make the night memorable for our attendees.

🌟 Meet Our Precious Padme – Looking for a Local Foster-to-Adopt Home! 🌟

Padme’s journey hasn’t been easy, but this little warrior has overcome more than most dogs ever will. She came to us at just 4lbs, suffering from glaucoma that sadly took her vision. Not long after, she became dangerously ill and anemic—we weren’t sure if she’d make it. But Padme had other plans.

Today, she’s a thriving, happy girl weighing in at 21 pounds (and growing!), she continues to amaze us every day with her strength, resilience, and loving heart.

Because Padme will eventually need surgery to remove her eyes, we are looking for a local foster-to-adopt home so we can support her through that process.

💛 Padme’s Ideal Home:

🐾 Local to the area (due to upcoming surgery)

🐾 Either the only pet, or with other friendly dogs around her future size (40–50lbs +)

🐾 A patient, loving family ready to help a blind pup thrive

🐾 Plenty of toys (she loves variety!) and approved chew bones for downtime

She’s doing incredibly well with house training, enjoys her crate, and is learning basic commands. And yes, she has totally figured out how to sneak into her foster mom’s bed 😉. Padme does really well with children.

Oh—and did we mention she’s already mastered all 14 steps of the back deck? Impressive, right?

A long awaited Mazel Update!

It’s been almost two weeks since Mazel was discharged, and we are so happy to share that she is doing remarkably well!

She is starting to get some pep back in her step and showing more energy every day. She’s been eating four small meals a day of prescription canned food and is learning how to use her new Bailey Chair — generously donated by the wonderful folks at Bailey Chairs 4 Dogs- THANK YOU! We would also like to thank a former PWD Adopter, Michelle for making contact with Bailey Chairs 4 Dogs and for paying the shipping.

Drum roll please———->Mazel now weighs 8.2 pounds! That’s a huge milestone for her, and we couldn’t be more proud of her progress.

She’ll be heading back to Internal Medicine next week for a follow-up, and we’ll keep everyone posted on how that goes.

Thank you SO much to everyone who has donated, shared her story, and sent love her way. Mazel is truly one of the kindest, most loving dogs — it’s still heartbreaking to think of what she went through, but your support is helping to rewrite her story. ❤️

How To Join In Tomorrow Night's Fun

We want you to become part of tomorrow night’s entertainment and to do so, we want you to bid on and make requests for songs that the entertainers play during their set.

You can request a song (with a tip) for a particular song for them to play and you can also request (with a tip) that they not play a song or even stop playing a song – or play the same song over and over and over! It is all based upon your requests and your tips!

Now of course, song requests with higher tips will get played first in their set – so if you really want your song played – make sure your tip reflects that!
However, you won’t be tipping with real dollars, we need you to take your dollars to purchase PWD dollars which can be used to request a song.

We have PWD dollars in the following denominations: $5, $20, $50, $100, and even $500 PWD dollar bills! So, head on over to one of the two PWD Tellers and purchase your “PWD Dollars”.

So here is what you will do:

1) Purchase “PWD Dollars”. We accept cash and credit cards

2) Fill out a song request sheet and give it to the entertainers with your request tip – now be generous – you want your song to be played and remember all of the tips go to PWD.

3) Fill out the song request sheet for another favorite song – and submit it with your tip. This can be a different song or the same song – doesn’t matter – it’s what you want to hear!

4) Want them to not play a song or to quit playing a song – make that request and tip them to stop!

5) Need more “PWD Dollars” then go right back over to the PWD Tellers and get some more. We will have three sets tomorrow night – make sure you have those dollars to hear you favorites!
