A New Beginning for Hogmany

When we first met 139 (later named Hogmanay) one of the 108 Scottish Fold cats we rescued, he was in rough shape. His coat was so severely matted that every movement must have been painful. It broke our hearts to see him that way — but we knew his story wasn’t going to end there.

Today, Hogmanay is living the life every cat deserves. His coat has grown in thick and soft, his eyes shine with joy, and he’s become the handsome boy he was always meant to be.

We’re so grateful to his new family for giving him love, safety, and comfort. And we’re grateful to all of you who send us updates and photos of your adopted cats and believe in the work we do — every message reminds us why this work is worth it.

Here’s to Hogmanay, and to all the second chances.

Finally we’re at the end of what seemed to be endless loads of laundry from the recent 108 Scottish Fold cat rescue. Wednesday is FREE Dryer Day at Country Tubs. While loading the machines, a lovely woman noticed the rescue logo on my shirt. We chatted a bit about cats and animals in general and she inquired about why I had so much laundry. When I explained she kindly pulled out her credit card and paid the cost of the wash.

Hi, I’m Astrid! I’m one of over 100 Scottish Folds who were living with an alleged “Scottish Fold breeder” and by definition, a hoarder. Now, I'm at FieldHaven Marketplace ready to meet you!

I’m two-years-young with stunning good looks that ultimately could make me a cover girl… but if you know cats, you can look into my eyes and tell that I’ve got a past. While many of my fellow Folds were able to move forward after being rescued, I am still unsure. I am easily scared, and hesitant to connect with others. My trust needs to be rebuilt and my heart needs to heal. I am easily food motivated, which helps, because we can bond over snack time, but I may also reach out my paw at you as a way to say stop if I’m feeling uncomfortable. I’m honest about this because I need a very special person willing to be patient, work with me, and remain kind and gentle through it all. I don’t mean to be this way nor do I want to be, so just remember that. I know I deserve love and a family, and that there is someone out there for me, so it’s just a matter of finding them… but could it be you?

108 Scottish Fold cats – our largest rescue to date – but we were never daunted by the sheer number that needed our help and were determined to liberate these cats from their deplorable situation.

With the crucial help of FieldHaven’s Animal Assistance Team we assembled a temporary shelter and began the arduous task of restoring each and every cat to optimal health. Dr. Sanchez at Companion Veterinary Clinic examined each cat’s condition, laying the foundation for their care, and documenting the extreme neglect.

Wonderful volunteers helped with the heavy lifting, such as daily care, i.e., cleaning, feeding, watering, and providing enrichment. Slowly, we saw the dimness fade and the bright light of 108 of the sweetest cats burst through.

Those with painful dental conditions started eating more, their constant pain was GONE. Those with labored breathing because of poor breeding that left them with short-heads and nose openings--too small to inhale a sufficient amount of air--can now breathe well after special surgery. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture.

Here’s where we desperately need your help: The financial impact on our small, but strong-minded Humane Society, is reeling with debt. Even with kind discounts for this rescue operation from all the vet hospitals, the bills have mounted. One particular dental cost $2,050. Another invoice, $2,756. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Thus far, we have identified 77% of the cats with dental disease; 68% with eye disorders; 4% with breathing irregularities; and 6% with heart murmurs.

Please, during the final hours of Big Day of Giving, send us a donation. Whatever you can afford, we will be grateful for. We need to continue to finish the care we started and prepare for the next one, or the next one hundred animals that will need us.

THANK YOU – FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS.

Big Day of Giving is HERE and we welcome your donations today! https://tinyurl.com/3avhnfe3 Princess Boomer thanks you for supporting nonprofits on this amazing !

As you’ve heard, we are in the midst of a BIG Scottish Fold kitty rescue & rehabilitation. These cats are moving away from being scared, shut-down and medically ill towards feeling confident and well. Today’s special mention goes to Princess Boomer, our self-appointed Shelter Supervisor. She’s been hard at work inspecting all the beds for maximum coziness and taste-testing the food (just to be sure it's up to royal standards). Excellent work, Princess!

Their First Real Chance… a Rescue Story

In February 2025, the Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills (HSSF) responded to a large animal welfare emergency, a crisis that broke our hearts and called us to action.
Over 100 Scottish Fold cats needed immediate rescue from a breeding operation that had spiraled out of control. Many were suffering from visible medical issues: dental disease, joint pain, infections, matted fur, irritated eyes, and scabbed faces. Some could barely walk or eat. Others were emotionally shut down, shaped by crowding, overstimulation, and minimal human interaction.

With help from FieldHaven Feline Center’s Animal Support Team (FHAST), we transported these fearful little beings to our temporary pop up cat shelter – a safe quiet space where healing could begin.

FieldHaven’s Animal Support Team was invaluable in quickly generating the needed framework for care – the supply donations, the housing and the knowledge in setting up an emergency care shelter.

The challenges were many. Over a third of the cats needed dental surgery—some were in so much pain they couldn’t eat. Others struggled with mobility, chronic conditions, and stress responses that took time and trust to unravel.

With expert care from Dr. Sanchez at Companion Veterinary Clinic and support from FieldHaven’s Hathaway Veterinary Clinic, they received the treatment they desperately needed. They began to emerge from the shadows of their former lives, for this wasn’t just a rescue – it was a promise to care for and recognize each cat as an individual: vulnerable, curious, resilient, affectionate and worthy of a safe, comfortable place to land!

And now, that next chapter can begin - adoption is no longer just a hope on the horizon, it’s here!! We have 12 cats currently ready for homes. Hopefully you will see them as we do: not only for what they’ve endured, but for who they are becoming. Adopters are provided with full medical records, guidance, and the honest story of each cat’s journey.

We are endlessly grateful to those who stood beside us:
• FieldHaven Feline Center
• Dr. Sanchez, Companion Veterinary Clinic
• Hathaway Veterinary Clinic
• Front Street Animal Shelter
• Purebreds Plus
• Dr. Cheryl Scott
• Our tireless volunteers, who gave their hearts and hands
• Every donor who said, “Yes, I believe in them too.”
