Their First Real Chance… a Rescue Story
In February 2025, the Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills (HSSF) responded to a large animal welfare emergency, a crisis that broke our hearts and called us to action.
Over 100 Scottish Fold cats needed immediate rescue from a breeding operation that had spiraled out of control. Many were suffering from visible medical issues: dental disease, joint pain, infections, matted fur, irritated eyes, and scabbed faces. Some could barely walk or eat. Others were emotionally shut down, shaped by crowding, overstimulation, and minimal human interaction.
With help from FieldHaven Feline Center’s Animal Support Team (FHAST), we transported these fearful little beings to our temporary pop up cat shelter – a safe quiet space where healing could begin.
FieldHaven’s Animal Support Team was invaluable in quickly generating the needed framework for care – the supply donations, the housing and the knowledge in setting up an emergency care shelter.
The challenges were many. Over a third of the cats needed dental surgery—some were in so much pain they couldn’t eat. Others struggled with mobility, chronic conditions, and stress responses that took time and trust to unravel.
With expert care from Dr. Sanchez at Companion Veterinary Clinic and support from FieldHaven’s Hathaway Veterinary Clinic, they received the treatment they desperately needed. They began to emerge from the shadows of their former lives, for this wasn’t just a rescue – it was a promise to care for and recognize each cat as an individual: vulnerable, curious, resilient, affectionate and worthy of a safe, comfortable place to land!
And now, that next chapter can begin - adoption is no longer just a hope on the horizon, it’s here!! We have 12 cats currently ready for homes. Hopefully you will see them as we do: not only for what they’ve endured, but for who they are becoming. Adopters are provided with full medical records, guidance, and the honest story of each cat’s journey.
