WEIRD FOOD/FARM HISTORY!!! Did you know one of first proponents of expiration dates on milk was none other than Alphonse Capone, aka Scarface.

Maybe you have heard this before. But the story you probably heard was that Al’s little niece got sick from drinking milk that was expired. Some stories say it was his son, others say it was his sister.
The Gangster with the heart of gold that cared for the children. Maybe there is some element of truth there, but let’s talk about how it really happened.

Capone could see the end of prohibition was near. He truly was interested in milk production as he knew the mark up was higher than his bootleg liquor and he was desperate for a legitimate business to carry over into after prohibition.

The problem was that “Milk” in Chicago was already a racket. While Capone had influence over the teamsters in Chicago, he didn’t have any control over The Milkman’s Union. The Milkman’s Union and the dairies in Chicago all agreed on fixed prices and they had a monopoly on milk in Chicago.

Al and his brother Ralph(Who earned the nickname “Bottles” from the ensuing milk wars) realized they could import milk from Wisconsin dairy farmers for much cheaper than the milk produced in proximity to Chicago. Their massive distilling operation could easily be converted to milk bottling and their technology for printing labels far exceeded that of the dairies operating in Chicago.

Capone strong armed the city council in to passing ordnances requiring grade and expiration dates on all dairy products and thus began the milk wars. While the milk monopoly could easily strong arm and intimidate local grocers, Capone’s Outfit proved to be a little more than they were used to.

When Union Milk Drivers and distributers refused to deliver Capone’s Milk, he had the President of the Milkmen Drivers Union kidnapped. Al and his brother Ralph used the ransom to purchase Meadowmoor Dairy.
So the story of Capone being concerned that all children drinking milk could do so with confidence based on the date for freshness may or may not be true. What we do know is true is that Capone and his criminal enterprise had the ability to take over the milk industry in Chicago. So why are we not drinking Scarface’s Fresh Milk or eating Gangster Cheese? Al Capone was indicated on tax evasion charges and went to prison just three months after purchasing Meadowmoor Dairy.
I’ll be honest, I ignore a lot of best by/expiration dates, but I don’t ignore them on milk, cheese, eggs, or meat. The next time you go to pull a swig out of your milk and see it has went too long…. Remember who made that possible. None other than Al Capone. What an amazing man if you can overlook the murder, prostitution, black mail, kidnapping, corruption….

🚧 Road Construction Update 🚧

Planning a trip out to the farm this week? Well, the City of Coopersville decided to make things extra fun—68th Ave north of Cleveland is closed for a month thanks to a water project. Your best bet: swing east to 64th, then head north to Wilson. Consider this your backroads traffic report, straight from farm country:

🟩 Green Roads: Smooth sailing! Take these and you’ll glide in like butter melting on hot cornbread.
🟨 Yellow Roads: Doable, but bumpy. Expect some extra “farm-fresh” chiropractic adjustments along the way.
🟥 Red Roads: Just… don’t. Still, not even for bacon.

🔁 Pro Tip: Punch “Countyline Community Church” into your GPS first, then head to the farm. Otherwise, you’ll get the unofficial scenic tour of every gravel road in West Michigan.

Drive safe, dodge the potholes, and we’ll be here waiting with the good stuff. 🐄💚
