😻 A client sent me this video after a successful introduction. 😻

Cat introductions make up 80% of my cases. There is NO way to predict how long it will take the cats to peacefully coexist, or if it will ever happen.

However, feeding cats next to each other and plugging in a pheromone diffuser has played no role in any of my successful cat introductions.

I have tried it all, but it works best for me to tuck the kittens in at night to get them used to a night time routine.

Cats are crepuscular creatures, meaning they are most active during dusk and dawn. However, if they sleep all day they will be awake and play during nighttime hours. Which can cause a huge headache for future adopters.

If daytime is filled with play and activities it typically only takes a few nights in their playpen to get them used to calm down at night.

There is food, water and a smaller litter box in the playpen. And usually a heartbeat kitty. 😻

The kittens may not be fully grown yet, but stretching and scratching habits are starting early in life.

Often we see tiny little scratchers in the kitten room. Giving them an opportunity to use a full sized cat tree with sturdy scratching opportunities may prevent bad habits early on.

I had a great time at the ABS Animal Behavior Society meeting in Baltimore.

I really loved this poster. Making science easy accessible through graphics is pretty amazing.

It’s humbling to think I will be presenting my own 🐈‍⬛ research in the coming years.

😻 I have a very small foster space, actually it’s my office.
To avoid door dashing, pawing under the door and the risk of kittens getting out I put up panels in front of the door.

Of course this only works until they are about 10-12 weeks of age. By then they can easily jump over the panels.
Still, I feel it’s giving me an extra layer of protection. My own cats are fairly resilient with foster kittens, but I also don’t want to take chances.

Kittens can be messy. They dig, they play and sometimes they are still getting used to using an indoor litter box.

If you have the space do yourself a favor and provide them with a full sized litter box.

Tiny kitten litter boxes are cute and nice for small playpens or cages, but they contribute to the mess.

Full sized boxes help contain the litter and are easier to clean than multiple small sized boxes.

If needed provide a little step to help them get into the box.

😻 Kitten season is in full swing and I want to share my top ten kitten fostering tips in July.

Behavior often takes the back seat. But we want to set up adopters for success and not create issues later.

Many adult cats display behavioral issues because they were raised as single kittens. From biting to suckling. We, human animals, can love them and care for them deeply. But we can not teach them “how to cat”.

I will never foster single kittens. Kittens should grow up with a conspecific.
