So today was big milestone for a couple of clients horses.

The first is a young gelding who actually showed some serious thought process and started to anticipate what I wanted. This is huge for him as he is very reactive and rather then think through a challenge he would just try to bolt away. Super proud of him.

The second is a youngish mare with a questionable history and who was completely untrusting of humans when I met her a couple of months ago. Today she allowed the farrier to trim her front feet. It wasn’t perfect but the few times she startled she only jumped but didn’t bolt away. The farrier was awesome and understood what we were dealing with so he took his time and allowed her to get comfortable with him. He wanted to try her hinds but my gut said she’d done enough so we will get those next time and he was ok with my decision.

As a trainer it is our job to always look for when the horse is giving us a try and when they do give them their reward. It’s also our duty and responsibility to lookout for the mental welfare of the horses we are working with and not push them farther than they are able to handle that day. Such was the case with both of these horses today. They both have a big try and both were rewarded with being done for the day.

Working on foot control and bend. She’s learning. I haven’t actually taught this horse anything in a very, very long time and we’re going see if she can handle being a cow horse. She’s never really been asked to work as hard as she’ll have to if we try sorting cows.

I do love it when the first saddling goes well. Pearl has never worn a saddle but handled it very well with only minor tantrum when she trotted. Asher has worn one before but we honestly have no idea how long ago it was. Both are rescues being rehabbed and evaluated for adoption.

Successful first ride for a client and her 4 year old Dutch Warmood today! Super excited!! Everything went well. Didn’t get any video or pictures of him fully tacked up with bridle because I was concentrating on staying calm and making sure the horse listened and paid attention. Photo was fist time being sat on with a saddle. His head is tucked because he’s trying to play with the lead rope not because she’s pulling on him.

It’s always a bitter sweet day when a client and their horse reach the level you set for their goals and they are ready to head out on their own without regular assistance. I’ll miss the sessions but am extremely happy with the results. Congrats to Debbie and BG!
