these sweet little ones have been with me for an extended stay while Lynn, their foster mom, recovered from surgery. They have been such a delight and I will miss them as they leave me. I will be keeping two (Lucy and Chia) as they need frequent medicated soak baths. Lynn cannot handle that yet.

Below are Gladys, Lucy, Sugarbear, Rosetta, Chia and Lucy

The rescue has taken in two little elder orphans. Rudy and Bear lost their Dad and had no where to go. I am told they were their Dad's children and very loved.

Rudy is 15 years old. His initial exam demonstrated he has severe spinal spondylosis, arthritis and blood work indicated he could have Cushing's disease. Further testing confirmed that diagnosis. He has been with us for a couple of months so has had time to be retested to adjust his medications.

Bear is 10 years old and very healthy. In fact, for an older baby, he is quite athletic. It's been a while since I had one that could jump on the sofa. He was so sweet as he sat at my feet waiting for permission to jump up for the first time. Apparently his temporary Forster did not allow dogs on the sofa. Now he is all over the place finding wonderful, comfy spaces.

Both of these boys are very sweet and so affectionate. They are always seeking love and attention.

They are not really bonded with each other. Bear is a very adoptable baby. If anyone is interested in giving him a loving home please contact me through messenger.

Rudy has been a big expense. Testing for Cushing's and retesting to adjust meds is high. And the medicine, Trilostane, is costly. Any help would be appreciate.

I have one more heartbreak to share, then I promise to bring some happiness and smiles.

Last Sunday night Ken left us and was able to find some peace and relief. I CAN SEE HIM SHOWING OFF HIS ATHLETIC ABILITIES IN GOD'S LAND and being very happy. But losing him was very hard and broke my heart.

We've been on a real rollercoaster with Ken for over a year. He's been up and down with health problems. Each new problem was tested, diagnosed and treated to the best of our abilities with initial positive results, but then he'd go down with some other problem. The real brake through seemed to happen when a gallbladder problem was diagnosed in December. He had major surgery and seemed to feel better almost right away. But it didn't last long. Within six weeks we were back to the diagnostic phase and he was found to have a new problem...an aggressive, rapid growing lymphoma. It was wide spread and there was only two options for his care. We could give palliative care and hope to keep him as comfortable as possible. Or we could try chemotherapy. Long story short...I was not in favor of chemo but was persuaded to consult with the oncologist. we saw her the very next day (Friday). She was not very optimistic but we decided to try one treatment of a mild chemo. That was a bad decision. He had every side effect that the oncologist mentioned. He was so sick, so weak and it was a horrible end to his precious life.

So now, my happy memories of Ken. Our story began with him in grave danger in a kill shelter. Long story to get to the end point of me taking into the safety of my rescue. He was an amazing pup. He was so strong and athletic. With proper training I am sure he could have been a champion agility dog. And he was sweet, happy and very affectionate. In the beginning he was available for adoption. I did several home visits for him but could not find a home that I felt was a safe and happy fit for him. So, he became one of our sanctuary pups. I am happy I made that decision. He was a house favorite to many of my friends, family and visitors. And he brought me much happiness. I will always have him in my heart.

A note of thanks to my friend, Judy, who sponsored Ken and also loved him very much. Ken and Judy enjoyed outings, car rides and many walks together.

Once again I am coming with very sad news. My precious Toby died suddenly at home on March 3. It was probably from the pulmonary hypertension (the same condition that took little Jet). He had been happy and eating all day. He'd come to me with wagging tail for attention. But when he collapsed that night, death followed immediately. I am grateful he did not live long enough to suffer and have difficulty with the recently diagnosed lung cancer.

Toby was always so special to me because of our beginning. He was the second hardest rescue I have ever done and he was so sick. When I secured him and took him to the vet he was starving, emaciated, in liver and kidney failure and was in high level heart worm infestation. My wonderful vet, Donna Kleinpeter, worked wonders with him and got him back into good health. That was in June 2010 and he was only a pup...about a year old.

To say his loss was devastating is not adequate. I will miss him everyday as he became one of my "heart" babies. He was Toby "the man".

First picture is when I rescued him.

Finally, I want to share some happy news.
Remember Sazzy, aka, Cookie? She was the little puppy with severe issues with her back legs the we took in to help. Extensive orthopedic consults resulted in the decision to not try to correct anything. Her foster mom decided to adopt her and she is very cherished.

Well, look at her now.......

I wanted to post more about Toby but already had too much sad news.

On Sunday night the same time Jett was declining, Toby started coughing up blood, lots of blood. Dr. Kleinpeter advised me to give him Scarlet's "emergency" meds and try to keep him quiet.

She also gave me more information on his condition that no one had told me. Apparently this bleeding episode was not unexpected and would probably happen again. It was the result of one of the tumors in his lung rupturing and they expected that would happen. The coagulation med worked and the bleeding stopped.

At no time did Toby seem to be in distress or in pain. He was coming to me with his tail wagging, readily went outside and ate well.

My present plan is to watch him closely, treat his hypertension and keep him on Scarlet's meds. Since his condition cannot be changed I will not let him linger and experience pain. I will love him abundantly and let him go at an appropriate time.

This past Thursday Ken and Toby went for a follow up check and ultrasound with Dr. Ryan, their internist.

First to Ken.....
He is doing great!!!! All agree that the basis of all his problems was the gallbladder. Since his surgery he has had no diarrhea, his bloodwork has improved, coat is beautiful and he looks so much better. It amazes me that no one related his long term problems with the gallbladder. But the good news is he feels good and has lots of energy.

Toby was a totally different story. He is very, VERY ill. Ultrasound and CXR showed wide spread cancer. He had an x-ray a few months ago and it showed nothing like we see now. His lungs have a multitude nodules and that means it is fast growing. I am devastated. After all, he is Toby "the man", my man. My vets agree there is nothing to help with that situation. I will continue to treat him for his pulmonary hypertension, keep a close eye on him for signs of decline, respiratory difficulty or pain. I don't want him to suffer since he cannot be cured but I don't want to let him go until it's time. Presently he seems happy and comfortable. He does not even have a cough. He is energetic and affectionate. I will love on him and be happy for every moment that he is with me.

It breaks my heart to say that we lost Jett. He seemed better and was breathing easier when he came home from Metvet. That lasted for a few days. Sunday he did not eat very well and slept most of day. By Sunday night he seemed to be resting well, in no distress at all. But he was so still. I picked him up to love him and a few minutes later he died in my arms...just stopped breathing.

I am grateful he was not struggling to breathe. He did not seem to be oxygen deprived. He just passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Thank you to everyone who helped with his care. These extraordinary medical bills is the reason our intake has been closed. We just can't keep up.

A final note on Jett....he was a quiet, sweet baby. The only thing that really excited him was meal time. As soon as he sensed the preparation he'd start his "big boy" bark and not stop until his food was in front of him. And he loved the sun.

Our little Jett is back home. So far he is doing well. They still do not know of the root cause of his pulmonary hypertension. Some test results are still pending. However, his new meds seem to be helping. His breathing is better and he is eating well. He needs a follow up x-ray next week and a followup "limited echo" in a month. But for now he seems much better.

Thank you to everyone who helped us out. Dealing with seniors means facing unexpected emergencies.

Our poor little Jett is back in the hospital. I had to rush him to Medvet to get him into an oxygen crate. He is back in congestive heart failure and the right side of his heart is enlarging. He will have an echocardiogram in the morning to evaluate him for possible pulmonary hypertension.

I had to leave a $$2,100.00 deposit. If anyone would like to help with this unexpected event it would be very appreciated.

I will update tomorrow.....

I could not get the above posted last night. So here's the update from today.

Jett had his echocardiogram this morning. His heart looks pretty good but he does have pulmonary hypertension. They ran a multitude of tests today trying to find the cause. He definitely has a pulmonary component...maybe caused solely by the hypertension. they also feel he may have aspirated. His white cell count is high indicating infection.

He spent the day in the oxygen crate and does not do well when taken out. But good news is he is more alert and ate well today. In the morning they will test him without the oxygen. And hopefully they will have the test results of everything that was done today.

I had to give them another $3,700. Any help with this unexpected expense would be very appreciated. And I will update tomorrow.

Please pray for this baby. In my rescue he is a mere juvenile at 10 years old. He deserves a much longer life.

I have some very sad news, sad enough that it has taken me a week to share. Last Friday our sweet little Daisy crossed over to her new journey. She was so very special and we are heartbroken.

Daisy came to us in November 2020. She was 16 years old and in very bad shape. She was only 3 pounds and very fragile. Several mammary tumors was the most immediate problem but she also had kidney stones, bilateral grade four patella luxation, mature cataracts, and very bad skin infection. Our wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Donna Kleinpeter, got her in better shape for surgery and performed her spay and removal of her tumors.

When Ida hit and flooded the sanctuary Daisy was with me. My wonderful friend, Lynette Matusicky, offered us refuge so we moved to a trailer on her property. She took over the care of many of our tiny babies and fell in love with Daisy. She has taken wonderful care of Daisy. With Lynn she received a lot of love and attention.

It seems her age and medical issues finally got the best of her. With heavy hearts we all agreed she was ready to rest. She will be very missed and always in our hearts.
