Linda Blackford: If we care about equine welfare, Kentucky needs to overhaul all laws and rules regarding free-roaming horses in Eastern KY.

More footage of Mud Puddle wandering around with the lasso on her neck, with Outlaw and Notaroan. Multiple people have tried to get close enough to remove the rope, but understandably Mud Puddle is being very skittish of human interaction. Horses AND people are going to get hurt during this horrific process

As you know, the Breathitt County Fiscal Court voted to remove all free roaming horses, and even though we don't agree with that decision and offered multiple ways to help manage the herds, our efforts to stop this fell short and removal is on-going. As the animal control approves each removal, we endure the things that comes along with their decision. One AHP volunteer was contacted by a person approved to pick up horses and was told that after the 15-day stray hold the horses were going to slaughter. We also heard some ended up at the local stock sale and now this...

Our hearts are broken but we pray that the local officials will have a change of heart and reverse their decision and reconsider our offer to help humanely manage the herds. We encourage every constituent in Breathitt County to contact their district magistrate and ask them to stop the inhumane treatment of all the horses and reverse their decision!

Check out this WYMT coverage on the free-roaming horses in Breathitt County. Their reporter spent the afternoon on a tour with us and talking about alternative solutions to help mitigate the issues the community is having instead of choosing total removal.

These old guys like Joker need some extra TLC, to live as best they can. We wormed him in February. Then in March we sedated him and had his teeth floated. We have also fed hay and alfalfa cubes to give him as much extra nutrition as possible. We have offered every bit of support we can, in the field. His f***l sample is pending so we can follow up with additional dewormer as needed. This has all been possible thanks to our donors, tour guests, and volunteers that want to see these horses live happy, healthy and free!

Newborn filly in Breathitt County needing immediate assistance! The filly cannot seem to figure out how to nurse even though the mare is trying to feed her! Filly just runs from her mom for some reason.

As National Volunteer Week winds down, we didn't want to pass up the opportunity to thank all our volunteers who work hard all year for the free roaming horses! Now that the grass is growing we haven't been feeding hay but we still deliver salt, check on the herds weekly especially as foaling season is in full swing. Other volunteers are busy doing inventories, working with rescue horses, and processing adoption paperwork - we've had 3 recent adoptions!
Our tour guides are also staying busy. We had 10 tours so far this month and a few more are booked!
Thanks AHP volunteers - keep up the good work!
