This little gelding sure has been a delight! We acquired him this past spring and honestly wasnโ€™t sure what direction to take him.
We knew he needed some work but felt he had the potential.
He has become such a remarkable boy with time and patience over this Summer.
He trail rides without being spooky, camps, pickets quietly, self loads in a trailer. Ground ties and stands patiently for whatever is asked of him. I threw a lot of new things at him; and I am proud of this gelding for always trying his best to perform and please.
Thanks for another beautiful ride today.
Youโ€™ve made me so proud ๐Ÿ’•

Your teenaged performance horse might not be old oldโ€ฆ but heโ€™s definitely got opinions, mileage, and at least one joint that predicts the weather.

Staying competitive past 14 takes more than luck. These horses have already proven themselves, now your job is to preserve whatโ€™s working and support whatโ€™s wearing down.

1. Baseline lameness evals once or twice a year
2. Injections only when needed (based on flexions, blocks, or imaging)
3. Supportive care: Adequan, Pentosan, Legend
4. Daily joint supplement if tolerated
5. PEMF, acupuncture, or laser therapy for maintenance
6. Dental, sheath/udder, and body condition checks every 6โ€“12 months
7. Soften up pre-run with stretching, walking, and warm-up laps
8. Shorter runs, fewer runs, or alternate setups when neededโ€”yes, heโ€™s earned it

โ€ข Slower recovery after events
โ€ข Sticky first barrel or hesitation
โ€ข Soreness that comes and goes
โ€ข Random โ€œoffโ€ days that didnโ€™t used to happen
โ€ข Getting grumpy under saddle (not just spicy)

These horses donโ€™t need to be retired, they just need to be respected and supported. Theyโ€™ve given their all. Now itโ€™s your turn to give them the tools to keep going comfortably.

We have a lease available on a resident horse at the barn.
This stout little gelding (14.3h) is a good boy; has been camping twice this spring for the first time in his life, he handled it like a champ.
He loads awesome, pickets quietly, not spooky.
He will walk quietly all day on the trail; lead or follow. Heโ€™s more slow than go.
He tries new things willingly (crossing water, logs etc).
At the barn he crossties quietly, saddles and bridles nicely.
Rides in the arena, easy to handle, lunges well, nice whoa, neck reins with just a light hack.
Heโ€™s not a dead head, heโ€™s alert and aware of his surroundings, he thrives with a person with some horse experience. Heโ€™s a fun little horse.
His quirk; heโ€™s not always patient at the mounting block.
He loves attention, is friendly, and eager to have someone love on him ๐Ÿ’•
