Ponied Maggie today ☺️ she is really started to come around to us and fully trust us now. Ground work goes such a long way and even though it hasn’t been a full 60 days she really has improved in so many ways. Today I put her in a “squeeze” position with Easy, walked into her and walked up behind her. Rubbed all over her from an above position as well. She took all of this in without fret or spook. Next will be to start obstacles with her so she can be more aware of her feet placing.

So much can be done before saddle time, please remember to never be in a hurry to rush the horse. Maybe to some these things seem silly but in the long run to Maggie it will make a difference.

Oh hey look it Tbird! The once Kentucky stallion now gelding still out here enjoying life! Happy as a clam! Our main focus on Titan was to get him softer on his belly so the owner doesn’t have to wear spurs. Titan tends to be lazy but if you saw him on a trail you’d say otherwise. Working on a few other goals for Jenny but this is one very sweet and kind boy. Very laid back, not much bothers Tbird much he’s a solid 8 year old Percheron/Paint Cross. If the bugs weren’t so awful right now he and I would be hitting the trails more frequently. Hopefully we can get to the trails one of these days!

Big dog Eddie! Amazing what 1 year does to a horse huh!? I’m proud of his owner for doing her homework when she took him home! He is a completely different boy than he was last year with us! More mature, quiet, no more sedation with his feet!!!! No stocks ladies and gentlemen! Yay!! No more kicking anyone hooray! Also no more bucking and broncs when we ride! Wowza! Unbelievable this is Eddie! We are getting him ready for his first breed show at the end of August for his youth rider! He’s doing great truly! Nothing but positives, onward and upwards Edward!

Our bougie mini horse squad back at it again this time at the Clark county fair fun show with our Equestrian Team! So much fun was had!
Panda, need we say more, our veteran, our little dynamite gal who does it all from showmanship to jumping to driving nothing that tiny little mini couldn’t do! Due to a slight Asthmatic attack towards the end of her last class we felt it best to not show the following day and took her home. Bowen wasn’t upset as he cared more about her health than a ribbon 🥰

Maggie has come incredibly far in over a year! Both Bowen and I have put so much time into her training. Remember it takes a long time to get even the smallest of horses broke! Last year she was spooky here, wouldn’t jump, and simply a ball of nerves. We have spent so many hours with this little mini helping her relax and enjoy the world around her. And look at her now, she’s jumping, trail in hand, halter, and we are working towards showmanship. Very proud of what she has already accomplished! Loads on the trailer with ease, bathes and clips so much better. It is a beautiful thing when you take the time and patience with a horse just how much they can flourish into their own beautiful self!

Our beautiful miniature horse mares came home with blues and reds Friday evening but what we were most proud of was how well Bowen has flourished as a handler himself! This is his last year showing minis as he has decided to show our big boy Zeppelin.

Congratulations Bowen!!! Great job bub!

Finally long overdue baths for the brother highlands! We typically bathe them one or two times a year (they get brushed frequently) and gosh were they filthy!!!! We’ve wanted to add a third to our herd, a white one but definitely not going with that color now 😂

Our steers are handled quite frequently so both were champs in the shower pad, better than some horses I’ve trained over the years 😂 and these guys could easily take us out if they wanted to. Charger is still a young boy but he is all muscle and those horns keep getting bigger all the time. Just like with the horses it’s important to work with the Highlands so it makes doing tasks such as this easy and not stressful on us and them. It has nothing to do with training and everything to do with the responsibility you take part as an owner 😉
Makes a world of difference in their temperament and when they get up to 1300lbs one day we will be glad they have their manners 🙌🏻

Happy Sunday here on the farm!

30 Days Does Not Make a Well Broke Horse, Folks

(Neither will 90, if you were wondering):

What Trainers and Horses Need YOU to Know

If we could only make this truth fully understood in the horse world, how much time and trouble would horses, buyers, owners and trainers save?

Fewer horses would be mishandled, misunderstood and exchanged. Trainers would keep their reputations intact. Owners/Buyers would realize it is “they” would need continual training and seek it out. . .

We’d all hold hands and sing “We Are The World,” but I am off-track now.

Some years ago, I sent my 8 year old gray Arabian mare to a friend to start undersaddle. She had her one year. Weather and time meant this friend put about 120 days of work into Champagne. At the end when she came back to me, Raven took her into a few classes at a show, and the pair did well. When she came back, she was a well started, sensible mare suitable for a solid intermediate rider. My expectations were met. They were fair. The trainer did a lovely job. The expectations on my horse were reasonable. Success.
When you take an un-started horse to a trainer, thirty days is not enough.

The bare minimum should be 90 days.

Longer is better.

Sure, it costs money.

Horses cost a fortune, and there is no way around that.

Of course, make sure you select an honest trainer with a track record of putting the time you’re paying for into the horse. Ideally, visit the trainer and taking lessons once it is possible on the horse you have in training, as well. 30 days is not enough to the vast majority of horse owners to step in and continue with success with the horse.

You’re setting the horse up for failure, and you’re setting the trainer up for a bad reputation, as you’ve taken the horse out of training too soon, will set the horse back and blame the “bad trainer” for your failure.

The only fault will be your own, though.

What your horse and trainer can do together after 30, 60 and 90 days are not what you and your horse can do together, necessarily. Since you sought out a trainer, you’re not one.

It means you need to be super engaged in the process with your horse, actively in lessons and seeking to learn yourself if you want to recreate the success you’re seeing unfold with your horse in training.

The expectation of a 90 day horse is that they now have a solid foundation of the basics. What those basics actually are will vary on the horse, age and trainer, but regardless, you do not have a finished horse, friends.

You do not “USUALLY” have a beginner safe horse, either. The expectation that you could is unfair to the horse and the industry, really.

Additionally, the horse will also not necessarily retain All of what he learns, unless you continue to work with the horse with a similar skill set and method regularly. So if you aren’t continuing your own education, you’re doing to undo what the horse has actually learned.

I see it so often:

horse has 30 days

owner can’t ride horse

owner says horse and trainer are bad

Sells horse

Horse ends up in a bad situation

Trainer is maligned, even though the trainer told the owner the horse would need longer

Owner never takes lessons

Buys another horse and starts an unkind cycle of horse exchange looking for a unicorn

The owner may eventually get a well broke horse that has, whether they know it or not, had years of training and good handling. The chances are that owner will undo some of that good training, though, as the person never tried to seek out “training” or continuing education for his/her self, but that is another blog, another story.

The moral? Be fair to your horse and your trainer.

Give the horse what he needs to get a solid start.

Good horses deserve good riders, so “train” yourself, so that you’re knowledgeable enough to work with your horse effectively.

Understand a well rounded, well trained horse takes years to develop, and they are worth the investment.

Good training isn’t quick.

Good trainers aren’t cheap.

Good relationships take a good amount of time.

Welcome summer!
Horses comfort is always our number one priority at RTF! Through the hot humid dog days of summer horses get 12 hours of turnout overnight to beat the heat and those pesky bugs! On the 90 degree days everyone gets a cool shower before breakfast and under fans all day. We still train just not as long and we make sure everyone is staying well hydrated!

Stay cool everyone! Enjoy these summer days!

Aurik my friend you are so wonderful! One of my favorites to ride! It may not look it but we promise he has lost some weight! Aurik currently lives in a dry lot (he’s not been super happy with us about that but being that rotund isint always healthy either 😅) changed his diet plan and of course is getting exercised on a regular basis. Yes even in this hot humid weather he is still getting a workout 🏋️
Aurik has a show next month that we feel he should be ready for (this isint his first rodeo) so we are getting him prepared for that upcoming event. He’s been such a pleasure to work with everyday. No complaints whatsoever just an all around good boy! 💕

Eddie!! This gorgeous Black registered Shire gelding has come such a long way in a years time! We are so honored to have him back in our program to help him further his education along. Owned and loved by Jenny, she has done a great job with him over the winter months. We are going through a few bits to see what works best for Eddie and his whoa has been amazing! He was very lazy with listening to my leg cues at first but now is much more sensitive and is lighter to touch, which we love here. No one wants to be kicking and squeezing a horse that they run out of breath especially an 1800lb horse 😂
Great job Edmond, we certainly adore the Shire breed and the athleticism and power they possess! One of our top breeds to work and train on here at RTF!
