The sudden blasts of fireworks send terrified animals running— out of yards, through windows, and over fences. Some are never found again. Your dog. Your cat. Your best friend. They rely on you to keep them safe.
✅ HOME: If your neighbors set off fireworks at an unexpected time, is your yard secure enough to keep your pet contained? During July 4th, if possible, keep your pets indoors. Closing windows and curtains helps to muffle the sound of fireworks and reduces the bright flashes that can scare pets.
✅ DISTRACTIONS: Turn on the TV or some calming music to help drown out the noise from fireworks. Offer your pet some toys or treats to keep them occupied.
✅ KNOW THEIR HIDING SPOTS: If your pet goes missing, it may be hiding in a place where they feel secure. Don't force them out. Let them stay where they feel safe. Forcing them out can make them more stressed.
✅ MICROCHIPS: Microchipping your pets can greatly improve your chances of getting your pets back if they become lost. If microchipped, make sure your contact information in the microchip registry is up to date.
✅ IDENTIFICATION: Ensure your pets have some form of ID on them - collar, tags, rabies tag/license. Some pet parents go the extra mile with a GPS collar device.
✅ PHOTOS: Take a current photo of your pets. Include specific unique markings for ID purposes.
✅ VETERINARIAN: If your pet has historically been anxious on this holiday, consult your veterinarian who may prescribe medication.
