🐾 Keep Pets Calm During Fireworks 🎇

Fourth of July fireworks can be fun for us—but scary for pets.
Here are a few tips to help keep your furry friends safe:

✅ Keep pets indoors, preferably in a quiet room
✅ Play soft music or white noise to reduce stress
✅ Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip info are up-to-date
✅ Never bring pets to fireworks shows

Let's make this a safe and happy holiday for every member of the family! 🐶🐱🇺🇸

Please welcome Dr. Carl Harris and Dr. Karlee Cochran to our team!

Carl August Harris, II, DVM, originally from Trappe, Maryland, and Karlee Cochran, DVM, originally from West Plains, Missouri. Both veterinarians are relocating to Easton from Vermont. The two joined the practice’s founder, Steven Harris, DVM; Jennifer Kerns, DVM; Erin Riggin, DVM; Lauren Di Vanna, DVM; and Olivia Holden, DVM.

Carl, son of Dr. Steven Harris, most recently comes from Onion River Animal Hospital in Berlin, Vermont, where he practiced as an Associate Veterinarian for the last three years. He completed a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2021 at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, after a clinical rotation at the University of Missouri School of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 2016 from the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. He is a graduate of Easton High School. After college, Carl was an avian biologist with EAG Laboratories in Easton, an environmental lab assistant at Horn Point Laboratory, the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science in Cambridge, and a veterinary assistant at Midshore Veterinary Service in Easton.

“I am appreciative of the time I spent at Onion River, where there were 10 doctors in the practice. The mentorship and friendships I made during this time meant a lot to me and gave me a great foundation for moving back here to join the practice. While in Vermont, I mainly focused on small animals – cats, dogs, and pocket pets. I enjoyed my time in Vermont being close to my brother Kyle and my sister in-law Cate and their family,” Carl Harris shares.

“I am excited to be back home in Easton and working again with my dad and the rest of the staff at Midshore Veterinary Service. I observed my father working as a veterinarian as a child and admired his desire for knowledge and his curiosity, both reasons he decided to become a vet. My dad never turned a case away that came through the door. There are not many people I have met in my life who could do what my dad did in learning so many aspects of veterinary practice,” he adds.

“I am looking forward to being able to jump in the truck and go on a farm call like I used to do with my father. I am anxious to learn the underserved large animal farm business that my father loves and gets such great satisfaction from,” Carl Harris states.

Karlee Cochran most recently comes from Kingdom Animal Hospital in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, where she practiced as an Associate Veterinarian for the last three years. She completed a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in Columbia, Missouri, and holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Missouri. She was a veterinary extern with Nave Veterinary Group in Las Vegas, Nevada; Stray Rescue of St. Louis in St. Louis, Missouri; West Plains Veterinary Clinic in West Plains, Missouri; and Indian Tree Animal Hospital in Arvada, Colorado.

Growing up on a farm in rural Missouri, Karlee enjoyed being around horses, cows, and dogs. She and her partner Carl share a love of Red Angus cows, which both of their family farms raise. Her interest in veterinary practice, however, is in small animals.

“I had excellent mentorship and gained a great base of knowledge while in Vermont, and enjoyed time spent in the beautiful state. I am excited to get to know a new community and to enjoy the activities the Eastern Shore has to offer,” Cochran states.

Carl and Karlee are both excited to work and collaborate for the first time in their careers. They recognize the autonomy and freedom that a family-owned, independent practice like Midshore Veterinary Service offers. They also look forward to carrying the legacy of the family’s practice forward.

Dr. Steven Harris comments that veterinarians are much more specialized today and are much more knowledgeable about the new drugs available to treat animals.

“It means a lot to me to pass along my knowledge and experience to the next generation, but also to learn from them. I am also excited to have my son now involved with the practice I have built. Karlee’s interest in doing pet dentals and surgery with the practice are going to be great additions to what we do,” Dr. Steven Harris adds.

Carl and Karlee are living in Easton with their mixed-breed bearded collie shepherd mix and two cats.
