St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church opened their doors and their hearts to Widget, a New Horizons dog, more than four years ago.

Earlier this year, Widget sadly passed away, leaving behind a retriever-shaped hole in his community.

Yesterday, the church held a beautiful service in his memory, which they've shared on their page. Widget’s ashes were interred on the church grounds, reuniting him with his first handler, Father Stephen Braddock. Robert took Widget in after Father Braddock's passing and provided him with love until the very end. He can be seen placing dear Widget's ashes during the ceremony.

We were deeply saddened by the news of Widget’s passing in April, but also so grateful that he did find the perfect placement. He will never be replaced but we hope that their incoming therapy dog, Uno, helps to mend their hearts.

We are excited to announce that today we finished our first Team Training of 2025!

For those of you who may not know, Team Training is where we pair dogs who have completed our training program with their new clients. It's two weeks where we go over dog care, commands, and help the bonding process start between each new team.

We placed 13 dogs this week and I'm happy to share the portraits I took of each of our newly employed dogs (and some group photos before we sent them off on Monday).

A big thanks to the puppy raisers who poured their time, love, and money into these dogs throughout their journey. It's hard, but it's worth it!

We want to applaud our very own Margaret K. (breeder caretaker to two sweet girls and a previous puppy raiser) for the amazing Garden Fair she put on in Longwood this past weekend.

We had a booth amidst all the plants with our volunteers taking shifts, each assisted by a dog in training, to educate the public on what we do from when our puppies first leave the office to placement with their recipient.

Hopefully we have succesfully recruited some new volunteers as well as applicants! We are always looking for people to get involved with puppy watch shifts, puppy socializing, puppy raising, weekend raising or dog sitting, and breeder caretaking.

We recently had the privilege of hosting Chrissie and Brenda from Local Souls for a visit! New Horizons got to share what we do, from the puppy stage to the Advanced Training stage, and they kindly donated to us so we can continue our hard but worthwhile work.

PUPPY RAISER NEEDED

Last week, Tiffani and Caitlin were able to visit our prison program at Sago Palm Re-Entry Center. Tiffani had a chance to spend some in-person time with the inmate handlers to supplement the weekly Zoom trainings.

However, the most exciting part of the day for them was probably the celebration portion! There was a cake for the handlers to enjoy and a special meal made for the dogs. We also packed treat bags for each dog and got photos of them holding theirs while wearing Christmas outfits.

A big thank you to the volunteers who kindly donated dog treats, made the dog food, and designed the cake image! All in all, the day was a huge success and we can't wait for the next time we can visit.

One more sleep until Christmas! A few of our pups got to meet Santa this month, although the excitement levels varied some.

When you're working with future service dogs, even Kris Kringle can be a socialization opportunity!

It was their first day outside and we shared some snippets of that yesterday. Well, it only took 30 minutes of fresh air and new surroundings to tucker them out. They're back at full charge today though!

An exciting day here at New Horizons HQ! Saffron's pups are 6.5 weeks old, and the weather was warm enough that they were able to explore the outdoors for the first time.

No matter how many times you get to see it happen, it's always special seeing them discover the world beyond the office.

A special thanks to our trainer, Tiffani, and our caretaker, Melody, for supervising this today!

Edit: Any colored marks on the pups are nail polish so we can tell them apart. 🙂
