🐾 Playdate Shenanigans! 🐾
Freya (our gorgeous 7-month-old brindle pit mix) and Tyson (the always goofy 13-month-old black and tan husky/lab mix) had an absolute blast tearing it up in the yard today! 💨🐕💨

That is… until Tyson decided the best way to cool off was drop mouthfuls of water all over Freya’s head. 😅💧

Let’s just say Freya was less than impressed with his water-sharing method. 😂

These two are full of energy, personality, and potential—and both are looking for homes where playtime (and maybe a towel) is a daily event!

Question of the day
Can I surrender my pet and get a new one?

If you are surrendering a pet to us, you may not adopt or trade that animal for another. Our mission is to find permanent, responsible homes for animals—not a temporary holding place.

If you have previously surrendered or rehomed a pet, we strongly encourage you to take time to reflect before adopting again.
Please consider the following:
✔️ Are you currently in a stable and secure housing situation?
✔️ Are you financially able to provide proper veterinary care, food, and supplies?
✔️ Are you fully committed to the time, patience, and long-term care a pet requires?

Pets are lifelong commitments, not temporary companions. We want every animal to go to a safe, loving, and permanent home.

Thank you for understanding and supporting responsible pet ownership.

Question of the day
Do I need to live in Marion or Grant county to bring you an animal?

While Marion Animal Care & Control primarily serves the City of Marion and Grant County, we understand that situations arise where animals outside our jurisdiction may need assistance.

✅ We do accept animals from outside of Grant County, however:
💲 A $150 fee will be charged for animals located outside of Grant County.
📍 Our focus remains on serving animals in Marion and Grant County.

If you're located in another county, we strongly encourage you to first contact your local shelter or rescue organization for assistance—they may be better equipped to help based on location and resources.

🐕 Before surrendering a pet or bringing in a stray, we encourage residents—especially those outside Grant County—to explore alternative solutions first:

🔗 Rehoming a Pet – We offer guidance and tools for safely rehoming your animal to ensure they find a responsible, loving home.
🔗 Found a Stray? – Follow our resources on how to help reunite a lost pet with their family while keeping everyone safe.

Question of the day
How Long Is a Dog Pregnant?

🕧A dog’s pregnancy typically lasts about 58 to 68 days, with an average of 63 days (about 2 months) from conception to delivery.

Pregnancy occurs when a female in heat is bred. This can happen "accidentally" if she comes into contact with any intact male. The likelihood of pregnancy is high with any unsupervised interaction, even if it's brief. This includes contact with both unrelated and related males (brother, dad, uncle), strays that may enter a fenced yard, or if the female goes missing for a few days.
A female in heat should never be left unattended—especially if there are intact males in the home or when she's outdoors.

🔴 Signs pregnancy include:
Enlarged or discolored ni***es
Change in appetite
Lethargy and decreased activity
Weight gain and swollen abdomen
Increased Thirst and Urination
Behavior changes (more affectionate, withdrawn, or aggressive)
Clear vaginal discharge
Swollen ge****ls
Nesting behavior

⚠️ Pyometra (Pyo)
A severe infection of the uterus that occurs in unspayed females, after a heat cycle. A pyometra is a common medical emergency that can look similar to pregnant dog.

🔴 Signs of Pyometra:
Lethargy
Vomiting
Decreased or no appetite
Swollen abdomen
Increased thirst and urination
Pus-like vaginal discharge (in open pyometra)
Fever
Weakness or collapse (especially in closed pyometra)

🔴 Timeline:
Typically occurs 2–8 weeks after a heat cycle

🔴 Veterinary Emergency:
Requires immediate surgery (spay) to remove the infected uterus
Fatal without treatment

✂️ Can a Pregnant Dog Be Spayed?
Yes—a pregnant dog can be spayed, it’s a decision that should be discussed with a licensed veterinarian.

🔹 What Spaying During Pregnancy Means:
Spaying a pregnant dog involves terminating the pregnancy and removing the uterus and ovaries, just like a standard spay.
It is most commonly done in early stages of pregnancy.
Later-term spays carry slightly higher risk, but many vets still perform them safely.

🔹 Why Some Choose to Spay During Pregnancy:
Prevents the birth of unwanted litters (especially important in areas with overcrowded shelters).
Reduces medical risks for the dog associated with pregnancy and birth.
Aligns with local animal control or shelter ordinances/laws.
Reduce increased financial demand pregnancy would cost

📞 Need Help or Advice?
If you think your dog may be pregnant, have a pyometra, or want to get your dog spayed contact your vet or local shelter right away. Many clinics, including low-cost options, can help you make the best decision for both the dog and your community.
