Dexter wants to know WHY all the foster puppies seem to gravitate towards him! AND steal his bones! His current foster sister, Sadie (a 9 week old cocker spaniel) stole his bone as soon as he sat down to chew on it!

Don’t worry, Dexter hasn’t taken up drinking to drown his sadness. He’s been doing ok. All our dogs have been adjusting to Mia being gone. Gunner has been more of a snuggle dog when he’s taking time off from patrolling the yard. We’ve found that Dexter likes to carry around food shaped toys, but eventually he’s tries to eat them and we have to throw them away.

Several people have asked how Dexter is doing after the loss of Mia. Unfortunately, Dexter and his siblings were boarding when Mia passed. I had dropped them off at daycare and boarding since we were having artificial turf installed in our backyard. I decided to keep Mia home so I could bring her to the vet. I knew something was wrong with her but was hoping it was just old age. We rarely board our dogs because we have a couple of amazing dog sitters, but we needed to this time. Boarding is stressful. I’m sure they were wondering why Mia wasn’t with them. When we got them home today, they were happy to be home and they were very tired (and stinky). Madie had just given Dexter a bath in this picture. We haven’t seen any signs of them wondering where Mia is yet, but we are on alert and giving them extra attention. I suspect they could sense that Mia wasn’t well, even though she was really good at hiding it.

After coming home from the vet, Mia got in the pool and walked into the house soaking wet (as usual). She wasn’t interested in eating, not even the scrambled eggs Madie made for her. She laid on the couch with Madie for a while. She eventually got up and came to see me. She was happy, tail wagging, but then she collapsed and couldn’t move. We rushed her to the emergency vet. They gave us the option of the pericardiocentesis, but reading between the lines we knew it was just going to delay the inevitable and put Mia through a lot of testing that would have been traumatic for her. As a family, we decided the best thing for her was to help her cross the rainbow bridge. We are devastated but know we made the right decision. She will be missed immensely.

We got some bad news today. Unfortunately, Dexters wife, Mia, has a very large heart and the sac around her heart is full of fluid. I knew something wasn’t right but didn’t think it was as bad as it is. The suspected cause of the fluid is either cancer or a bleeding tumor. Mia has slowed down and developed a cough over the past few months. When she didn’t want to eat this morning, I moved up the exam I had previously scheduled. In the morning, she should be going to a specialist for a more thorough evaluation and pericardiocentesis. Until then, we are loving on her a lot!!! She’s a ticking time bomb, unfortunately, and actually fainted at the vet after coming back from having bloodwork and X-rays done. It was very scary!! But we are home now and she is snuggling with Madie.

Today is my gotcha day! My mom and my Madie came to Granbury to pick me up and bring me home (as a foster lol). I knew I was going to be staying forever!! My Madie brought me to Woof Gang bakery and we picked out some treats for me and my siblings (and wifey).

Dexter always watches when we are eating on the couch. He’s so cute!
