Now taking new clients: Casey Bennington-Palmer
(she/her)
BSW, EAGALA ES, MSW Student
Clinical Intern + Lead Equine Specialist

Casey is passionate about the unique and transformative healing power of the human-animal bond. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Walden University and is currently pursuing her Master of Social Work (MSW), with an expected graduation in 2025. With a lifelong connection to animals and a deep commitment to trauma-informed care, Casey is excited to continue building her career in trauma-focused animal-assisted psychotherapy and veterinary social work.

Casey began riding horses at age five and never outgrew the “crazy horse kid” phase. She studied Animal Science at Berry College and Therapeutic Horsemanship at Lander University, competing nationally on the Intercollegiate Equestrian Teams at both schools. In 2013, she graduated from an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Nursing program and became a Credentialed/Registered Veterinary Technician. Over the years, Casey has worked in small animal, equine, large animal, and emergency/critical care settings. In 2019, she earned her Fear-Free Animal Professional certification, emphasizing ethical and effective low-stress handling.

In 2020, Casey became an EAGALA-certified Equine Specialist and now holds a military designation for working with service members, veterans, and their families through equine-assisted services. Her career in veterinary medicine sparked a deep interest in trauma therapy and grief counseling, leading to her current focus on integrating clinical social work and animal-assisted interventions.

Following the completion of her MSW, Casey plans to pursue a Veterinary Social Work Certificate. Her goal is to support veterinary professionals coping with compassion fatigue, burnout, anxiety, and PTSD, as well as clients grieving the loss of animal or human loved ones.

Casey is a proud spouse and daughter of combat veterans and holds a special dedication to serving military personnel and first responders. As a mother to a remarkable child on the Autism Spectrum, she is passionate about helping neurodiverse children understand and express their emotions and needs. She is LGBTQIA+ affirming and welcomes clients of all backgrounds, identities, and family structures.

In her free time, Casey can often be found in the barn or pasture with her horses, or spending time with her dogs (Rylee and Pancho) and cats (Lil Bit and Harvest). She also enjoys riding her Harley Street Glide, “Cher,” and cherishing time with her husband and children.

Best Childhood Memories of Atlantic Beach

1. Jungleland.
Hands down, Jungleland was the most fun place on the planet. Putt putt, bumper boats and skee ball made the two mile trek totally worthwhile.

2. The sand bar party.
I was no more than 6 or 7 when my parents hauled me out to the sandbar beneath the big bridge and by the time I was 14, I was hitching rides and pretending to drink beer.

3. Ghost crab hunting.
After dark, my dad and brother and I headed to the beach with a net, bucket and a flashlight.

4. Sand dune sliding.
My cousins had these great big sand dunes behind their house, where a waterslide was later built and then torn down for a Food Lion.

5. The circle.
Just a road, a loop near the beach and in the middle a plethora of carnival rides and games.

6. The Underground.
A bar that allowed most anyone in to watch live action in the mosh pit.

7. Camp Morehead.
Not much was better than a camp where one could play knuckleball for three weeks or windsurf to Salter Path.

8. Cape Lookout.
A nineteen foot, 1972 Mako, a former dingy on a big boat, hauled 11 of us, a gaggle of beach chairs and coolers to the cape, where we would snorkel and look for conchs.

9. Wallowing in the ocean.
Many a day, my brother and I would float and talk and duck beneath the waves for hours, forgetting to go in for lunch.

10. Family dinners.
A bunch of cousins, aunts and uncles and grandparents conjure up memories of the summer we peeled 50 pounds of shrimp.

Welcome Home, Sweet Girl ❤️

This morning, we welcomed a new soul into the care of Horses of Pamlico. She's in rough shape, every bone visible beneath her weathered coat, her eyes dulled by exhaustion and neglect. But despite it all, there’s a quiet strength in her, a flicker of hope that’s already beginning to shine a little brighter.

She’s safe now.

Quarantined in a beautiful, green pasture at one of our loving foster homes, she’s beginning her journey toward healing, rest, and renewal. We can’t share her name just yet, we’ll just call Sweet Girl for now.

Rescue work is never easy. It’s messy, it’s emotional, and it takes a village. But we believe every horse is worth fighting for. And today, we’re asking for your help.

If you’d like to contribute to her recovery and help us continue saving horses like her, donations can be made to:

If you’re unable to give financially, please consider sharing this post. Awareness is powerful, and every share brings us closer to the people who can help.

Thank you for standing with us—for believing in second chances and for loving these animals the way they deserve.

With gratitude,
The Horses of Pamlico
