A Story That Deserves to Be Told—And Heard
A few weeks ago, a beautiful, affectionate cat showed up at the doorstep of a family in SE Portland. She wasn’t just looking for food—she was looking for kindness, for comfort, for someone to notice her. The family took her in, fed her, and kept an eye out, hoping her original owners would come forward.
When our rescue team arrived to check for a microchip, hope soared. She had one! This meant she had a home, a family, someone who loved her. But the joy of discovery quickly turned into heartbreak.
BB is eleven years old. She spent her life with a woman who cherished her—until that woman had to move into assisted living. When we knocked on her former home’s door, the family members who answered hadn’t seen BB for weeks. And worse, they didn’t want her. No one did.
How do you explain that to a cat who once knew love?
Sadly, this isn’t an isolated case. It happens far too often. Pets who are adored for years suddenly find themselves unwanted when their owners can no longer care for them—often due to aging or illness. But here’s the thing: this is preventable.
If you love your pet, have the conversation today about what happens if you’re ever unable to care for them. Talk to family. Talk to friends. Make a plan before it’s too late. Because pets, especially seniors, struggle to find new homes—and too many end up in shelters or abandoned entirely.
BB needs a new home. She is a stunning long-haired black cat with a sweet, gentle personality. The wonderful family who found her has been caring for her, but they can’t keep her forever. She deserves to spend her golden years in a home where she is truly wanted. Contact Cat Utopia for information about adopting BB.
Let’s change the story for BB and others like her. If her story moves you, share it. Talk about it. And if you can open your heart to a senior cat, please reach out to your local rescue. They’re waiting.
