After Veronica (now Elly) went home, we received a very short but sweet update:

“We are in total love with Elly.”

With her big puppy dog eyes, super soft fur, and quiet, thoughtful demeanor we had a feeling that would be the case. Elly was one sweet pup and from the looks of it she’s been settling in nicely with her new family doing everything from getting lots of snuggles to going for her first boat ride. We are so happy for Elly and her new mom and dad. THANK YOU FOR ADOPTING!!

HAPPY NORDIC FEST 2025 EVERYONE!! Stop by for snuggles, give the pups a Norwegian treat, play animal-themed games, and pick out a cat or dog sticker. You can also learn more about HSNEI and all the services we offer. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!

We recently had two incredible youngsters hold a very successful lemonade stand for HSNEI. They raised nearly $200 and then purchased all of these great items for the cats and dogs waiting for homes. If you look hard, you can see adoptable Phoebe doing a very thorough inspection of all the donated goodies. She gave everything a paws up except for the blue squeaky pig, which she gladly passed on to one of the pups. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WORK, BOYS, AND FOR BEING SUCH AMAZING ANIMAL ADVOCATES!!

THESE LITTLE ONES NEED YOU!! We currently have THIRTY-THREE cats and kittens at HSNEI under the age of one. Several of them have spent a good deal of their lives in the shelter, and many newer arrivals have been waiting for weeks or months already. Kittens should be free to run, play, and explore, but unfortunately, that’s not easy to do living in a cat condo. Space is limited, as is the number of staff and volunteers needed to give these sweet little ones the love and snuggles they deserve. PLEASE-if you’ve been considering adopting a new feline friend, visit www.hsnei.org/adoptablecats to fill out an adoption application. If you can’t adopt, you can help by fostering, volunteering, or donating. We are currently at capacity for cats and kittens, so every adoptive or foster home will free up space for us to help that many more cats!!

We recently had to say goodbye to a very valued member of our team, Dr. Amanda Elston. She served as HSNEI’s veterinarian for the past three years, providing spay and neuter surgeries, medical treatments, and invaluable expertise. She was not only a skilled doctor who cared for the cats and dogs; she was a friend and dedicated supporter of HSNEI. Dr. Amanda never seemed to walk past an animal without saying hello and checking in on them, and always had time to talk, no matter how packed her schedule was. Our vet room seems quite empty now without her beaming smile, contagious enthusiasm for animal care, and jazzy surgery day music. THANK YOU, Dr. Amanda for three great years and good luck in all of your future endeavors!!

Ollie had that kind of puppy charm that few could resist. We received many dozens of applications for this sweet boy, but in the end, he seems to have ended up right where he needed to be. Ollie’s new family lost their 14-year-old pup last November, and they hadn’t felt their hearts were ready to welcome anyone new until they saw him. They all fell instantly in love with his infectious smile and felt he might be able to make their family complete again.

Ollie is now Chewie, short for Colonel Chewbarka Jones, and his new mom says “He has acclimated so well and it feels like he's always been part of our family. He has been sleeping well and doing well with house training. He is loving going for walks, running in our back yard, his training treats, and giving us big hugs when we get home. The kids ADORE him and love playing with him and he has fast become their protector (my daughter wasn't feeling well and he stayed right by her side). Thank you for bringing this amazing boy into our lives!”

THANK YOU FOR GIVING THIS BOY SUCH A WONDERFUL SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE!!

Kylo is like a little ray of sunshine on this dark and dreary Saturday morning. This tiny boy is an 11-month-old Chihuahua pup with the energy of two (maybe even three) big dogs. He loves to run, he loves to play, and he loves YOU!! Kylo will run some of the fastest zoomie circles you’ve ever seen for as long as his little legs can carry him and then settle in next to someone for snuggles. Every time someone walks by his kennel, he does a little tap dance and practically bounces, asking to be picked up for some love. Although he’s being very brave as the tiniest of the tiny at the shelter, he would much rather his forever family come for him soon. For more information on this adorable boy or to fill out an adoption application, visit www.hsnei.org/adoptabledogs today!!

🐾 VETERINARIAN OPPORTUNITY - Northeast Iowa 🐾
Looking for a veterinarian who wants to do work that matters.
We're seeking a vet who's interested in shelter medicine and rural community impact. No corporate pressure, no sales quotas - just solid medical care for animals who need it.

What the job involves:
You'd be the medical lead for our shelter covering five counties. Think shelter medicine, spay/neuter work, and helping us build community wellness programs. Our Executive Director has veterinary experience herself, so you'd have someone who gets the medical side of things.

What we can offer:
$80,000-$120,000 depending on experience
Help with housing costs
24-36 hours per week (flexible on the exact schedule)
Professional development support
New graduates are welcome - we'll help you learn shelter medicine
There's potential for equine work if that interests you

About the area:
Northeast Iowa's Driftless Region is pretty unique - rolling hills instead of flat farmland, outdoor recreation opportunities, and small towns where you can actually afford to live. It's rural, but not isolated.
If you're interested:

Position starts August 15, 2025
