Ever wonder how to give praise without relying on treats? At Leading the Leash we only use positive reinforcement and encouragement but that doesn’t mean showering them with treats.

Here’s some tips:
🐾 Verbal praise goes a long way. An enthusiastic good boy or girl when your pup shows desired behaviors is more important than admonishing unwanted behavior.

🐾 Body Language such as being excited and engaged during positive interactions is a very important part of good communication.

🐾 Timing is everything. Make sure to give your praise the moment a desired behavior is shown making it crystal clear for your pup what you are looking for in your relationship.

❄️ As the weather gets colder and snow blankets the ground, our canine companions are ready for winter wonderland fun! Below are some tips on how to prep your pup for a safe and enjoyable time in the winter months.

🐕 Reinforce essential cues such as "stay," "come," and "leave it." These cues can enhance walks and outdoor activities, especially in icy or snowy conditions.

🐕 Winter brings its own set of hazards. Be mindful of melting salt as it can be harmful to their paws.

🐕 Struggling with leash pulling during your pup's walks? Let’s make strolls more enjoyable for both of you!

Far too often we see people pulling or “checking” the leash. Unfortunately, you are sending the opposite signals than you want with these techniques. Try a front attach harness and condition your pup to check in with you during your walks. Time to start walking together instead of your pup walking you.

🐾 Dealing with an over-enthusiastic greeter?

Teach your dog the 'off' command and reinforce it consistently during interactions. Encourage alternative greetings like sitting or offering a paw, and don't forget to praise these good behaviors!

Keep visitors in the loop about the training process and kindly ask them not to encourage jumping. With patience and consistent training, your pup will learn the art of polite greetings in no time!

When dealing with your furry friend's destructive chewing, remember the power of positive reinforcement!

Be consistent in communicating to your pup what is acceptable to chew on and what is not. If they are chewing on something that they shouldn’t use your leave it cue and re-direct them to one of their toys instead.

✨The holiday season is fast approaching, so ensure a joyful and safe season with your pup.

This time of year is filled with all kinds of new experiences and possibly dangerous items such as trees, ornaments, wrapping paper, wires, and open flames.

Use the leave it cue to let your pup know that something is off limits and then immediately redirect them to an acceptable toy and praise them for interacting with the item you chose. Encourage safe behavior through consistent training, and enjoy a worry-free holiday season with your furry friend!
