One of SBRR's greatest checked out of the earthly hotel this week, and she will be sorely missed.
Ophelia the Rat ๐ crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday, and although we don't know exactly when she was born in early 2022, she was estimated to be close to 3.5 years old. She was one of Christine's personal heart rats and was saved from becoming danger noodle ๐ dinner when she adopted her as her own. (Yes, she was "just" a stereotypical feeder!) Her sweet temperament and personality made her a keeper, and it made her a wonderful rodent representative and awesome with children. Her other pursuits also include inner ear inspections and guerilla rodentistry, but only when she was at home and nobody else was watching.
For those who have attended our off-site events since 2022 from LA to Pasadena to Orange County, you will have probably petted Ophelia and scratched her ears as she hung out with volunteers. She was a favorite among the staff at Discovery Cube LA. As she got older, she enjoyed cuddling in volunteers' arms and basking in all the attention.
Her contributions to rat education and breaking down rodent stereotypes are immense. She is the first rat from SBRR to appear in a movie film shoot. She holds the record for the most appearances by any rat at an off-site event, with her final event being the Lawndale Pet Fair in June. And when she was supposed to retire from off-site events last October, she stuck around to teach her younger cagemates how to engage with the public.
She's back home with her original cage buddies, Gertrude and Kiwi, and probably shuffling papers around their cage while running across tables.
Run free, sweet Ophelia. We're pretty sure that Old Man Patch greeted you with a nice jar of yogies. โค๏ธ
