Established in 1990, Oklahoma City Equine Clinic is a full-service equine hospital that offers routine medical care, assisted reproductive services, surgical care, as well as 24-hour emergency treatments. Assisted reproductive services are also available to assist clients in the breeding process for mares and stallions. The clinic is equipped with an in hospital laboratory and is available for 24 hour emergency service and nursing care.

Do you know how to recognize an eye injury in your horse? 👀

They can be easy to miss - but they are always an emergency. Even small injuries can become serious quickly. 🐴

⚠️Signs to watch include:
•Squinting in sunlight
•Tearing up
•Swelling/ Redness around the eye
•Cloudiness/discoloration
•Discharge
•Bleeding
•Rubbing Eyes on hard surfaces

If you notice any of these signs, call OCEC right away. Quick action is key in protecting your horse’s vision.

✔️ Make any dietary changes gradually – introduce new feeds or transition from pasture to hay slowly. 🌾
✔️ Encourage water intake – colder temps or frozen water can decrease how much water your horse drinks. Try soaking feed or offering warm water to boost hydration.💧
✔️ Keep them moving – exercise and turnout help keep the gut active. 🏇

🚨 Even with the best care, colic can still happen. The most important thing is to stay alert and have a plan. If you notice any signs of colic, give us a call right away – every case is serious. 🚨

Today is recognized as World Mental Health Day – please take a moment with us to acknowledge the importance of mental health – for our clients and those in the veterinary community. Caring for animals is deeply rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding, especially when meeting under stressful situations. 💙🐴

OCEC is pleased to announce that Dr. Stevens is now offering acupuncture appointments! 🎉

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine technique that involves introducing tiny needles into specific locations on the body. These specialized "acupoints" stimulate a response via body fluids, connective tissue, the nervous system, and/or the endocrine system. Stimulation of these points can have healing effects & restore homeostasis in local and distant tissues.

Acupuncture can be helpful for conditions including but not limited to:

✅ Musculoskeletal problems such as lameness, arthritis, muscle soreness
✅GI conditions such as f***l water syndrome and poor appetite
✅ Skin conditions such as allergies and anhidrosis (non-sweating)
✅ Neurologic problems such as facial or radial nerve paralysis and Sweeny
✅ Respiratory conditions such as asthma
✅Reproductive/urinary conditions such as infertility and poor milk production
✅General pain relief and performance enhancement

It is important to note that while acupuncture can aid in the treatment of many conditions, it is not a cure-all and is often recommended in conjunction with traditional Western medicine diagnostics and treatments. If you're not sure whether acupuncture can help your horse, feel free to ask!

As the season changes, so do your horse’s needs! Here are some things to keep in mind this fall:

💉Vaccines/ Boosters – Fall is the perfect time to make sure your horse is up to date on vaccines or schedule any needed boosters, especially before the stress of winter weather.

🦟Parasite Control – Drops in temperature does not mean to drop the parasite control! Fall deworming is important to target strongyles and other internal parasites before they pass the winter in your horse. We can help you find the product that best suits your needs based on their f***l egg count testing! 🔬

✅Body Condition & Coat – As the leaves start to change, so does the forage. Keep in mind that your horse’s nutritional needs may change as well – and with the incoming fluff, weight changes can be harder to catch!

Meet Dr.Ayers 🩺🐎

Dr. Ayers grew up all over the country as an Army kid, but calls Leavenworth, Kansas, home. She completed her Bachelor's degrees in Equine Science: Breeding and Animal Science from Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, where she worked on multiple farms and was involved in Standardbred breeding farms. She earned her DVM degree from the University of California - Davis as an equine-focused student with a particular interest in reproduction across species. She is looking forward to breeding your mares and collecting your stallions next breeding season.

Dr. Ayers now lives in Edmond, Oklahoma, with her Navy husband and five dogs. 🐕 In her spare time, she enjoys reading, running, and drinking tea. She is passionate about educating clients and students alike, and is happy to answer any questions you may have.💖

Handling Wounds in Horses 🐎🩺
Accidents happen, but knowing how to respond to a wound can make all the difference. Here are a few tips:

✔️Move the horse to a stall or safe place if possible without causing additional stress.
✔️Minimize contamination – avoid touching the wound too much or probing if it's deep. If you can’t see the full extent of the injury, inspect carefully, but do not dig or poke. 🧼
✔️Control any bleeding by applying gentle and consistent pressure with a clean cloth or bandage. Do not put anything on the wound other than cold water or a compress without consulting your veterinarian. 🩸

🚨 Call OCEC – even small wounds can become serious if not treated properly. When in doubt, it's always safest to let us evaluate the situation. Quick action means quicker healing and fewer complications.

Meet Dr.Stevens! 🩺🐴

Dr. Maddie Stevens is a North Carolina native who's had a lifelong passion for horses and the horse industry. She was an avid 4-Her growing up and still owns the Quarter Horse she got at 10 years old.

After earning her B.S. in Animal Science with a minor in Spanish from North Carolina State University, Dr. Stevens worked as a technician at Peterson Smith Equine Hospital in Florida, where she gained a ton of veterinary experience and an appreciation for racehorses. She returned to North Carolina to complete her DVM at North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine. In vet school, she focused heavily on equine medicine and pursued many extra equine education and outreach opportunities.

After graduation, Dr. Stevens and her husband along with their horse and cat moved to Oklahoma to join the OCEC team. Dr. Stevens loves all aspects of equine practice and is looking forward to developing a relationship with you and your horse.

Our Story

Oklahoma City Equine Clinic is a full service equine hospital located in central OKC. The clinic was founded in 1990 by Dr. Dee Gragg, Dr. Brian Carrol, and Dr. Larry Powers. The clinic is located on 24 acres within 10 minutes of the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds and Re*****on Park racetrack. In 2008 the clinic underwent renovation to include new hospital stalls and a new pharmacy and laboratory area.

Oklahoma City Equine Clinic offers a wide arrange of services, including ambulatory services; basic wellness, dental, lameness, hospital and surgical care, assisted reproduction for the mares and stallions and surgical services. We are also staffed 24 hours a day to assist in any equine emergency. Our staff is full of trained veterinarians and veterinary technicians with a passion for helping horses of all shapes and sizes. Here at Oklahoma City Equine Clinic, your horse is treated like one of our own.
