Shake was 4 1/2 years old when she was turned over to BSR in 2023 after experiencing a traumatic injury to her lower spine. Once in BSR's care, the neurologist evaluating her determined that the damage was beyond repair and even with surgery, she had less than a 15% chance of ever walking again. The decision was made not to put her through surgery, having such a poor prognosis of ever walking again. Although Shake is unable to walk, she is able to hold herself up and has a wheelchair to assist her. Early in 2024, Shake underwent emergency pyometra surgery for an infection in her uterus. Through it all, Shake remains happy and is loved beyond measure by her permanent foster family.

Although only 3 years old, Kermit has triumphed over a lot of adversity in his life, but he is strong and is making progress on all fronts! He came into care as a very fearful and unsocialized young fellow and not only had to learn to trust and learn essential etiquette for living inside a home, but he also faced extensive medical issues. Not only did he have heartworms, but he also had severe bilateral patella luxation and torsion of his leg bones. BSR treated him for the heartworms, and Kermit underwent surgery on the worst side with excellent results. Overall, his needs on so many fronts kept him in care for over a year until we could even consider moving him towards adoption. In the end, though, BSR felt that the condition of his other knee was a wildcard and while not requiring surgery immediately, there is the possibility that he will need surgery down the road or the knee could lead to other complications. In addition, emotionally Kermit may always have some PTSD about strangers and needed an understanding home and fosters to help him continue to build confidence socially.

Maya was 6.5 years old when she came into BSR's care as a critical case in the Spring of 2022. She had spinal discs rupture that required surgery but she was also pregnant and near term for delivery. Fortunately, after the spinal surgery, she underwent a c-section and delivered 4 healthy pups. After her stay with another foster to allow the puppies the time they needed with her, she began physical therapy and soon moved on to her permanent foster. One of the side effects of her back injury has been her inability to completely empty her bladder. Although her foster family diligently helps her express her bladder, Maya has battled repeated urinary tract infections. After working with her regular vet as well as specialist at NC State Veterinary School, it was determined that a cystoscopy was needed to get a true look at the inside of her bladder. In addition to flushing out the bladder, a bacterium was discovered that was not showing up in the multiple urinalysis that had been performed.

While Maya experiences fewer UTI's since that procedure, she does need quick attention and antibiotics when the foster senses they have returned. Although she has faced many challenges, she persevered thanks to her strong spirit and can-do attitude and the attentive, dedicated, going "above and beyond care" and efforts of her fosters", as well as the care of her veterinarians, specialists, and therapists.

Sweet KitKat needed a LOT of TLC and good vet care when she came into BSR's care. She got both in spades. Upon intake KitKat was in very poor shape and needed a large mammary tumor removed for biopsy; and her skin and coat were in terrible shape due to allergies and infections. Today she is continuing to heal, inside and out, in a home where she knows nothing but love.

WOW! Day ONE of our campaign and we have raised over $5,000 towards our goal of $100,000! Thank you!

Meet PFC Boone!

An 8 week old puppy taken in due to a congenital malformation of one of its forearms. The puppy had experienced a difference in bone growth rates, and the two forearm bones and their wrist and digits did not properly align, leaving him with a non-functional
limb the appearance of having two paws. One of BSR’s veterinary advisors, an orthopedic surgeon in Florida, researched the condition extensively to find other instances of the kind of surgery needed, and was able to discuss with a colleague who
had performed a similar surgery and had a good outcome. Boone did get his surgery, which essentially combined both forearm bones at the lowest possible point to create a “super limb” and the extra digits were removed to give him one paw. Boone is doing great! But he will remain a permanent foster dog so that BSR can manage his care for the future.
