If you interrupt a behavior, give your dog an answer.

A lot of people are comfortable telling a dog what not to do.

No barking.
No jumping.
No pulling.
No rushing the door.
No fixating.
No reacting.
No grabbing.
No demanding.

And sometimes, yes, a behavior needs to be interrupted.

But interruption is only part of training.

If you stop the behavior, your dog still needs to know what to do instead.

If your dog is pulling, where should they be?

If your dog is barking out the window, what should they do after you interrupt it?

If your dog jumps on guests, what behavior do you want when people walk in?

If your dog is fixating on another dog, how should they reconnect with you?

If your dog rushes the door, where should they go?

Correction can provide information.

But direction gives the dog a usable answer.

That is the difference between simply stopping a behavior in the moment and actually changing the pattern.

Training is not just:

“Don’t do that.”

It is:

“Not that. Do this instead.”

Come back to heel.
Go to Place.
Check in with me.
Settle.
Wait.
Disengage.
Move with me.
Make a better choice.

Dogs need clarity.

They need structure.

They need follow-through.

And they need to understand what behavior works.

If all we do is interrupt, we leave the dog guessing.

If we interrupt and then give direction, we help the dog learn.

That is where real training happens.

Sheba and Maya had the BEST day of their entire summer yesterday! ❤️🐾

These two girls have been through a lot of changes lately. Sadly, their owner is no longer able to care for them, so we are looking for wonderful new homes where they can get the love, attention, walks and adventures they deserve.

Sheba and Maya are very good friends, and of course it would be beautiful if we could find someone willing to welcome them both. We also know that may not be realistic, and finding the RIGHT home for each girl is what matters most. They absolutely can be adopted separately.

I have the pleasure of having sweet Trinity here with me for the next week! ❤️

Trinity belongs to Ari, someone I had the privilege of working and training alongside in the past. Ari is an incredibly thoughtful dog owner, and it shows in the dog Trinity has become. She is such a lovely, well-mannered girl and an absolute pleasure to have around.

Trinity may have a few more limitations with our walks these days, so we’ll be keeping things at her pace and making sure she gets plenty of time to relax, enjoy herself, and just be part of the crew. The best part? Everyone gets along beautifully, which makes having her here even more enjoyable.

I’m so happy to have this special girl spending the week with us. Welcome back, Trinity! 🐾❤️

Sheba and Maya got out for some much-needed walks today! 🐾❤️

These girls haven’t had many opportunities for longer walks over the past couple of months, so today we made up for a little lost time. Fresh air, movement, new smells, and a chance to just get out and enjoy themselves did them both a world of good.

Safe to say, we got those legs moving today! ❤️🐕

Coco is learning how to walk on her “magic leash.” 🐾

When Coco first wore it with Mom, she was not impressed. She threw herself down, refused to move, and even gave a few dramatic alligator rolls trying to get out of it.

Sometimes dogs need time to adjust to new equipment, and one of the biggest mistakes we can make is stopping long enough for the protest to work.

With Coco, the goal was simple: stay calm, keep steady forward guidance, and help her realize that throwing herself down was not going to make the leash come off or end the exercise.

The moment she chose to get up and move forward, the pressure changed and the walk became easier for her. That is where the learning happens.

This was not about making a big production out of it or getting emotional. It was about clear communication, consistency, and helping Coco work through a moment of uncertainty instead of avoiding it.

It did not take long for her to realize she could handle it.

Sometimes confidence building looks like helping a dog move through something they don’t love at first — calmly, fairly, and without letting the avoidance behavior make the decision.

Coco is learning how to wear her “magic leash.” 🐾

For a softer, more timid dog like Coco, new equipment can feel confusing at first. So we take our time and make the experience calm, clear, and positive.

The leash itself is not magic — the communication is.

It helps give Coco’s mom a clearer way to guide her, redirect her, and help her work through moments of uncertainty without overwhelming her.

For Coco, this is another little confidence-building step.

Learning something new.
Feeling less unsure.
Trusting the process.
Realizing she can handle more than she thinks she can.

Small steps matter, especially for the quiet, cautious dogs. 💕

Gigi is working on her door greeting skills. 🐾

Door greetings can be exciting for dogs — people arrive, energy changes, and suddenly they feel like they need to rush, bark, jump, or take charge of the situation.

With Gigi, we’re working on helping her understand that the door is not her job to manage.

Instead, she is learning:

Wait.
Listen.
Stay calmer.
Let Mom lead.
Greet people with better manners.

This is not about taking away her personality. Gigi is still Gigi. 💕

It’s about teaching her that she can be excited without being pushy, and she can greet people without turning the doorway into chaos.

Good door manners start with structure, consistency, and clear expectations — and Gigi is working on all of it. 🐶

A little update on Zimmy ❤️🐾

Zimmy had to have dental surgery after a fractured tooth root caused some abnormal gum tissue. Thankfully, it was nothing more serious, the tooth was extracted, and she’s now home recovering.

It’s also a good reminder to be careful with very hard chews. Antlers, bones, yak chews, and other extremely hard items can sometimes cause cracked or fractured teeth — and dogs don’t always make it obvious when something hurts.

And of course, Zimmy apparently charmed the entire veterinary staff while she was there. 😂 They told her family she was by far the best-behaved Airedale they’ve ever seen! (Maybe the ONLY well behaved Airedale!)

Please send our favorite Airedale some healing thoughts while she recovers. ❤️

Recovery matters more than never getting distracted.

A lot of people think progress means the dog never looks.

Never notices.

Never reacts.

Never gets concerned.

Never gets excited.

Never makes a mistake.

But that is not real life.

Dogs are going to notice things.

They are going to see another dog.

Hear a noise.

Watch a person move.

Notice a bike, a car, a squirrel, a cart, a door opening, or something unfamiliar in the environment.

The goal is not to create a dog who never has a response to the world.

The goal is to help the dog recover.

Can they notice something and come back to you?

Can they get concerned and still take direction?

Can they become excited and then settle back down?

Can they make a mistake and then reconnect?

Can they work through the moment instead of staying stuck in it?

That is where real progress happens.

Recovery shows us that the dog is learning how to process information, regulate themselves, and make a better choice after something catches their attention.

That matters.

Especially for dogs who are nervous, reactive, excitable, or easily overwhelmed.

Training is not about pretending distractions do not exist.

It is about teaching the dog how to handle them.

Notice it.

Work through it.

Recover.

Move forward.

That is real-world training.
