The last pup of the year to test HZP from the v.d. Skjaldborg A litter, Agol v.d. Skjaldborg. “Baba” with his handler Ian Wisecarver.

When Ian called me about a dog he was in residency for plastic surgery. He lived in an apartment in downtown Dallas but made the effort to drive 2 hours to my location any time he had a free moment to train for his VJP. Baba earned a score of 69 with an 11 in pointing along with being marked sight loud.

As time went by, Ian finished residency and passed his boards to obtain the title of MD along with acquiring a position as Homer Alaskas only plastic surgeon. Ian moved to Alaska over the summer, and had minimal time to train his dog but he made the effort to attend my online force fetch classes as well as stop by the house as often as he could to learn from me.

Ian and Baba then traveled across the globe again to test the HZP and although yesterday did not go the way we wanted it to with a failed rabbit drag, Baba scored an 11 in field search and a solid 10 in duck search along with many other 10s across his scoresheet.

Ian and Baba are a testament to committing to the breed and putting in the work that they could with the time they had. They showed up for me and the rest of the Drahthaar community and for that I am grateful. Ian has a hell of a hunting dog to show for it.

This will be a story I will tell to those who say, “I just don’t have time”.

Congrats to Brett and Asta v.d. Skjaldborg for competing in the 2024 Armbruster. This is a special test for our dogs that do very well in their VJP and pass some pre qualifications to enter. It’s always been something I’ve wanted to attend but it’s hard to leave September in Alaska and all of its hunting opportunities. Brett and Asta made the commitment as a first time Drahthaar/handler duo, put the time in all summer, and traveled all the way to Minnesota from Texas for this event. Asta had really nice scores in the field as well as a very good breed show score of 9/9 at just 13 months old. I feel that will only improve as she matures. Asta had a rough day in the water, but I’ve seen her work and she’s capable of much more. She will be back for some redemption in October for her final HZP.

These are the kind of handlers I want to place dogs with. Those who are committed to the breed and will hunt and love their dogs as much as I do. Thank you Brett, you’ve done her well.

The Folded Wing Kennels - v.d. Skjaldborg Drahthaars had an amazing weekend at their HZP test. To me this is the most difficult test in the hunting dog world. Young pups with a lot of demanding subjects.

My dogs showed up and took some names. After working hard all summer, my two A litter pups scored the highest of any of my dogs in the past.

Agnarr v.d. Skjaldborg - 184
Agatha v.d. Skjaldborg - 183

My third dog Eloise tested the next day. She showed her strengths in every subject and ended the day as my highest scoring dog of all time and most likely the highest scoring dog I’ll have for a very long time.

Eloise vom Tundramoor - 189

For those who don’t know. A 180 HZP score is a “perfect” score. Every point above that is extraordinary. To say I’m proud is an understatement.

Doc and Gunther have been with us since May. Their hard work this summer paid off with two Prize one Natural Ability passes!

It was the year of the Small Munsterlander, and we expect nothing but the best out of these dogs.

Can’t wait to see what their first hunting season brings them and their owners.

William Burns sent me a special present the other day. A relation to Sam. The terrier I grew to love and the dog that helped me through my first guide season.

I call her Bonnet. She completes my Jagdterrier duo, in fact she completes my pack of dogs at lucky number 7, as I’ve promised myself I will not take on another until one of them passes. Together the duo is BlueBonnet. Named after the character played by Robert Duvall in the movie Open Range. Or the Texas state flower, the state where both dogs were born.

Lots of fun to be had in the future with a crew full of heathens. Fur and feather near and far will know Blue and Bonnet well.

I am excited to announce this planned breeding. This is something Edda and I have been working towards for 4 years.

This litter is special. A performance breeding to place these pups amongst the elite. Both parents have earned a prize one VGP and are sichaut (sightloud) which is a very important manner of hunting for both big and small game. Both have also earned very high scores in duck search, making them some of the best duck dogs in the country.

I expect Edda to cycle early this summer.

Please call to make a deposit and reserve your pup. Number is on the image.
