We often receive inquiries from fellow koi keepers asking which koi medications and pond treatments we recommend. Two of the koi health treatments we both highly recommend and commonly use ourselves include KOI PRAZI and KOI NITRO.

Flukes are among the most common koi parasites and can be found during routine scoping in virtually any established koi pond. KOI PRAZI, “the fluke destroyer” is both the freshest and the purest praziquantel powder available on the market. We have used this product ourselves for many years and consider it to be a critical MUST-HAVE treatment for any serious hobbyist.

Tissue damage caused by flukes and other koi parasite attacks can quickly lead to bacterial infections. And if left untreated, these bacterial infections can quickly spiral out of control, often resulting in fish losses. This is exactly where KOI NITRO, “the bacteria buster” comes in. While being both extremely safe and easy to use, KOI NITRO quickly removes deadly anaerobic bacteria which often causes infections leading to ulcers in koi and other pond fish.

Southern California Koi Rescue is a registered non-profit animal rescue. Our sole mission is to find new forever homes for these precious living jewels. Since 2008 we have successfully rescued and rehomed literally thousands of koi which came to us from commercial water features and residential ponds located throughout CA, NV, and AZ.

An approved Koi Adoption Request is required to help ensure our available koi are placed into suitable ponds only. Much like when you adopt a dog or cat from your local animal shelter, a nominal rehoming fee is charged for every koi adoption. This rehoming fee is a very small fraction of typical koi dealer wholesale cost and helps to offset some of our operating costs for the various services we provide.

Unfortunately, it is not cheap nor easy to do what we do. So if you are looking for free koi, please look elsewhere. As a registered animal rescue, our sole mission is to find suitable new forever homes for the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care. In addition to large koi fish rescues, we also consistently receive a very high volume of turtle rescue requests. Unfortunately, we have been unable to accommodate all these requests due to a lack of resources and insufficient room available in our dedicated turtle pond habitat.

Our dedicated turtle pond habitat is intended to serve as a temporary home for our rescued turtles while they await permanent placement through adoption. Due to extremely high demand for turtle rescues, in October 2023 we invested significant resources to completely rebuild our dedicated turtle pond habitat. This upgrade allows us to safely care for significantly more turtles awaiting new forever homes.

Unfortunately, the demand for turtle rescues will continue to far exceed our capacity. Therefore, effective January 1, 2024 a fee of $20 USD per turtle will be required for all turtle rescues/surrenders. This donation will help to offset some of our costs for caring for your turtle(s) while we diligently work to find them suitable new forever homes…

When we say you’ll never find a better value on gorgeous large koi fish, we really mean it.

Back in 2020 — out of necessity during the height of COVID, we made some of our rescued large koi fish available for adoption direct to private hobbyists for the very first time. Since then we have come to know many high end koi collectors who regularly attend our special hosted koi adoption events. Many of these hobbyists travel great distances to attend because these events provide a unique opportunity to acquire quality nishikigoi for literally pennies on the dollar.

The minimal rehoming fees charged during our events are a tiny fraction of typical koi dealer wholesale cost and help to offset some of our costs for the various free services we provide. Koi collecting is never a cheap hobby regardless of your income, but koi adoption can allow many hobbyists to acquire beautiful living jewels they might otherwise be unable to afford. We work extremely hard to keep our rehoming fees as low as possible, so if our rehoming fees are still too high for your budget then perhaps koi keeping is not the right hobby for you. Goldfish are much cheaper, and we have those too!

Our dedicated team of volunteers commonly travels hundreds of miles at their own expense to complete large koi rescues located throughout CA, NV, and AZ. Because many of our volunteers have full-time careers during the week, it is not uncommon for them to put in 12, 14, or even 16-hour workdays on weekends to help rescue these precious living jewels. No one is getting rich doing what we do. In fact, like most nonprofit animal rescues, sometimes we feel extremely lucky just to break even considering all the expenses required.

So why have we been committed to doing this now for nearly two decades? Well, the answer is quite simple. We do this because we genuinely love it, because few things in life bring us as much joy as when one of our valued supporters and friends shares a photo or video with us showing some of our rescued koi fish enjoying their new forever home. Having now hosted dozens of koi adoption events over the past 3 years, we have also greatly enjoyed making it possible for approved private hobbyists to acquire large, beautiful koi fish they might otherwise never be able to afford.

As we look towards the future, we want to express our sincerest appreciation to all those who have supported us along the way. - You have a properly designed koi pond with sufficient filtration to support large/jumbo koi.
- You do not care about “pedigree” and are only seeking to add beautiful fish for your pond.

KOI NITRO, also known as the “Bacteria Buster,” is a highly effective treatment for bacterial infections common in koi and other pond fish. KOI NITRO nitrofurazone powder is a highly effective anti-bacterial and anti-microbial treatment for koi, freshwater and saltwater fish.

We have literally rescued thousands of koi fish from failing Aquascape design water features. As a registered non profit organization, our sole mission is to find suitable new forever homes for the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care.

While both can make beautiful additions to your backyard, there are many significant differences between a typical water garden (Aquascape design pond) and a dedicated koi pond specifically designed to handle large koi fish (and the waste they produce) at typical stocking rates. One large koi can produce as much waste as hundreds of smaller fish.

Koi keeping can also be an addicting hobby, resulting in many hobbyists overstocking their ponds. A proper koi pond design should include a bottom drain installed at the lowest point. A pond bottom drain effectively sweeps your pond floor 24/7, negating any need to ever purchase a pond vacuum nor ever hire a “certified” landscaper for seasonal pond clean outs.

To help maximize koi health the pond floor should also be smooth — not covered with rocks and gravel as this creates a toxic breeding ground for anaerobic bacteria and other pond parasites. The vast majority of koi fish waste also sinks to the pond floor, where it will NEVER be removed by a skimmer filter as it hides under the gravel and rocks.

The filter setups commonly installed on Aquascape design ponds are also significantly undersized for large koi. A properly designed koi pond should also be at least 3ft deep (deeper is better). For all these reasons (among several others) we believe Aquascape design ponds do not provide a sustainable healthy ecosystem for koi.

And because koi health is our top priority, we strongly prefer to make our koi available for rehoming exclusively to properly designed koi ponds…
