Happy Whiskers Animal Assistance, Inc., dba Happy Whiskers, is an all volunteer organization that was formed on January 11, 2008 for exclusively charitable, educational and animal welfare purposes. The organization was formed by two people who have a genuine concern for the welfare of dogs and cats in Jefferson County, West Virginia, and who want to help the animals and citizens of the County

Today we hauled 6 pallets of donated cat food and distributed them local shelters. Berkeley County Humane Society was almost completely out of cat food, so we left them with 3 pallets. Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County took 1.5 pallets and the rest was distributed to local TNR groups. Unloading in this heat was miserable. We had to take lots of breaks and downed our weight in water. We are so fortunate to get donated product and that we are in a position to share the wealth.

This sweet rattie came into Animal Control after she was found stuck to a glue trap* in someone's garage. She was alert and active upon intake. We took a cage to their office for her and noticed that she wasn't looking too good. We rushed her to the vet but she was crashing and all of our efforts were not enough. She died just as I got her back home. I love rats, so this is hard, but I'm also glad that she didn't have to die alone on the glue trap.

Last week we had the honor of attending a suprise birthday party for one of our good friends and supporters. Beth requested donations in lieu of gifts and performed her "waterfall shot" for donations. This skill, learned during her years at Penn State, has aged particularly well, as has Beth. Her generosity netted over $1,000 in donations! 🥰 Beth's awesome boyfriend, and organizer of her party, John, also adopted a senior Jack Russell from us 3 years ago. Sassy has been living her best life with John, enjoying her twilight years.
The BIGGEST Thank You to two amazing humans, Beth and John. ❤️❤️

On December 18th my youngest niece saved this dog from the middle of a rural road near Libertytown/Woodsboro, MD. Neighbors reported seeing her running for days, but no one could get close to her. A report was filed with Animal Control and she was scanned for a microchip. Her photo was also posted in multiple FB groups in an attempt to find her owner. While we were waiting for her to be released from her stray hold, we opted to bathe and groom her to make her more comfortable. Her skin issues have improved, but she's still itchy on her back, and at the base of her tail. Her teeth are a mess, with advanced periodontal disease. She had an extreme amount of hair impacted under her upper right lip/teeth and around her front teeth. The hair was rotting and causing her gums to recede and the teeth to decay. This hair has been accumulating for years and was affecting her ability to eat. (I'll put pics of her teeth in the comments so this post doesn't get flagged.) We've started her on antibiotics and pain meds to keep her comfortable until she can have a dental. Over my decades in animal rescue, I've seen older dogs with a similar accumulation of hair on their teeth, but nothing as bad as this. Animal Control has awarded her to us, as we've done our due diligence to locate an owner. My niece has named her "Coconut" because she was brown when they found her, but now she's white. 😉
Now the expensive part begins. Coconut will need bloodwork, spay, and extensive dental care with many extractions. I've put a link below for donations. We are a 501c3, and donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Thank you so much for helping to bring this sweet older lady relief from her previous neglect.
