Welcome home Joey, 15 LONG days!!

Three year old kitty Joey decided one day to do something unusual and bolt out the back door as his pet parent Christa was feeding their indoor/outdoor kitty. Joey was gone in a flash and Christa spent the entire night outside trying to find him 😞

The next day the search continued and Christa did everything she could think of to find Joey (flyers, talking to neighbors, contacting the animal shelter and nearby vets, motion activated cams, etc).
He's normally a pretty skittish kitty so she figured the odds of someone picking him up were low.
I was contacted that same day to help.
I went over lost cat behavior with Christa, made a few small adjustments to what she had in place and we discussed scent luring him home.

The nearby houses to Christa are empty and there are lots of sheds, piles of stuff, etc around them-plenty of hiding places for a lost indoor only/skittish kitty!

After a few days of their best efforts and no signs of Joey, I was scheduled to track. Unfortunately due to an unexpected injury to my hand that would never happen.

BUT then on day 7 a potential sighting of Joey in the neighbors backyard! A cam and scent station was moved and that night there was Joey on cam! But Joey didn't eat and actually never would eat on any cams placed.

A trap was moved in front of the camera (thank you Cindy for loaning a bigger trap) but then things got crazy. Day after day, night after night there was Joey on camera at the neighbors and in his own yard-but never once showing interest in the trap! Hot high value foods were a no, catnip/treats were a no, scent items from Christa and Joey's mom/siblings were a no, the sounds of Joey's siblings meowing were a no, a laser pointer was a no-Joey was obviously eating somewhere else and had zero interest in what we were offering. He actually seemed pretty content outside while the rest of us were getting grey hairs trying to figure out how to lure him into the trap to safety!
Even a house trap was tried but unfortunately didn't work.
I decided we needed to totally switch up food and mentioned trying Churu's. Joey's fur-Mom said he actually loves those and bingo-we have Joey setting one foot inside the trap eating Churu! Slowly the plate of churu was moved towards the back of the trap until boom-Joey went in, trap went off, adventure over 🙌🏻

It took some time for Joey to decompress and acclimate back into the family but he's doing well.
Christa never gave up and worked diligently to get Joey home safely

And as an added bonus I have a new lifelong friend 😁

Every missing pup case I send Missing Animal Response Network founder Kat Albrecht-Thiessen calming signals video. Why? Because it's highly effective and so many people are unaware of what to do when they see a loose dog.

https://youtu.be/cmiZzB643is?si=2YyF_twRFzOijFeA

Too often people chase, corner or "try to catch" loose dogs in dangerous and ineffective ways.

Here are two different happy pup reunions where the owners listened perfectly and were able to safely reunite with their lost pups using calming signals!

Welcome home Snoop and Nala 🐾💜

Welcome home Sue, 5 days!

Sue is a shop cat at a Marine Warehouse Center in Wilmington NC. She's well known, well loved and well taken care of by employee Tessa.

One day a customer picked up a boat but no one knew Sue was hiding inside! When the boat owner was driving on Military Cutoff road Sue jumped out and ran into some nearby woods. A driver saw her and pulled over to help but Sue was gone quickly.

Sue is wearing a collar with an Air Tag but the problem is Sue was in the woods-no people with iPhones walking around for the tag to ping. Tessa immediately headed over but the air tag was inconsistently pinging.

I was brought in on day 2. We discussed flyers/posters in the areas around the woods and a scent station monitored by a trail cam. With air tags being so unreliable we were looking for a needle in a haystack.

I told Tessa no more searching, that could scare Sue but she could try just sitting in her car, with it off, the door open and an open can of tuna. Pretty quickly
she saw Sue! Unfortunately Sue was scared and immediately ran. Her air tag did not ping anymore that day after the interaction.

The next day Tessa borrowed a camera and trap from my friend Cindy in Wilmington. We talked through set up and responsible trapping techniques.
Sue's air tag was randomly pinging all over the place so Tessa set up as best she could. It appeared Sue was moving around quite a bit that day.
Tessa set up and then got another ping away from the trapping area. She went over there and Sue was sitting under a bush!! Tessa did everything right and after some time Sue trusted her enough to come up to her!

Sue, short for Suzuki, is now living full time inside with Tessa! And she's got herself a proper GPS tracking collar.
Sue is being rightfully spoiled by Tessa who loves her dearly 💜🐾

Welcome home Oreo, 39 days!

During a fire alarm in their apartment complex Oreo accidentally slipped out the door in the chaos. He was initially seen right across from the apartment he escaped from but then nothing.

His fur-Mom, Kayla, alerted the apartment complex, animal control, the rescue she got him from a year prior and local veterinary hospitals.
Kayla adopted Oreo after he was left behind by his "family" who moved. Neighbors had been feeding him for a year before someone finally got a rescue involved. Oreo was very lucky to get off the streets and find Kayla 💜

I was brought in two and a half weeks after he went missing. We went through all the usual recovery techniques and scent luring to the wooded area he was last seen in. Because they live on the second floor and it's a gated doorway, I figured the odds of him returning all the way home were slim.

Oreo's fur-Mom was out of town for a few days but got back to work searching for him as soon as she returned. She also wanted to try tracking. Even though it had been past the typical 2-week mark that we like to track within, we decided to give it a go and see what Kiyaya told us.
We started at the point where Oreo was definitely seen right after he escaped.
Ki took us through the woods, through the parking lot of the apartment complex next to theirs around the front part of a neighborhood and into a small construction zone right behind the apartment complex Oreo lives in! That's where the scent ended.
We set up a trail camera and Kayla was diligent with scent luring. Unfortunately 3 nights after the cam was set up, 2 very large coyotes showed up so all food had to immediately be removed. With no Oreo or even other cats on cam my concern was the coyotes had pushed him out.
We regrouped and moved the cam to a different part of the track but no Oreo showed up 😔

Kayla continued working hard to find him, never giving up! On day 37 someone posted a picture of Oreo on their front porch. BUT this was MILES from Kayla's apartment-what the heck? Turns out Oreo had been in this neighborhood for a week!
Kayla immediately got in touch with the poster but Oreo was still roaming the neighborhood. Actually he was rather enjoying himself and even sleeping in the sun at one point. No one could get close to him and he wouldn't go in a trap.
Kayla went and sat with him for hours but he wasn't quite trusting her again.
The next day Kayla returned with more yummy treats and sat with Oreo. When he finally got close enough she quickly scruffed him and put him in the carrier. That was it, Oreo's adventure had come to an end!

Based on how far Oreo was from home and the fact Ki ended us in an area full of vehicles, it's clear that he hitched a ride in someone's vehicle, more than likely this was unintentional. If Kayla had given up, Oreo would not be back home living the good life as an indoor only kitty!

🎆 Did you know that more pets go missing on the 4th of July than any other day of the year? 🎆

The loud booms and flashing lights of fireworks can send even the calmest pets into a panic.
And in the days before and after July 4th people may be setting off fireworks.

Don’t let your pet become a statistic!

Protect your pets this holiday:

✅Do walks or exercise time before dark to avoid fireworks. Be cautious in the heat.
👎🏻 Do NOT leave pets unattended outside.
🔒 Double-check fences, doors, and windows.
🐾 Keep them indoors. Set up a secure, quiet space inside.
🎧 Play calming music or white noise to drown out fireworks. Give them treats or toys to keep them distracted.
🛑Skip taking them to celebrations—they're happier and safer at home.
🏷️ Make sure collars have current ID tags
📱 Microchip your pet & keep info updated
🧑‍⚕️ Talk to your vet TODAY about calming options if needed.

Today was a very hard day to say the least. Kiyaya did amazing and I'm so proud of her!

Every time we start a track we hope for the best. Unfortunately today that was not the case. We are absolutely heartbroken but we hope giving the family closure helps a little bit 💔🐾🌈
