During Olive’s training trip to Lowe’s, she worked on managing her emotions and not becoming too aroused, despite being in a new and stimulating environment. While she started out quite excited and distracted, she settled into a calmer mindset and remained neutral.

With Brody’s help, I was finally able to make an e-collar intro video.

I’ve wanted to get a proper video of the very early stages of e-collar work for YEARS.

But to be honest, most of it is very subtle and is almost always missed in video vs. in person.

Although this might not be the greatest quality video - and let’s be honest, it’s pretty boring to most people - I hope maybe it can do a couple things.

Hopefully it can show that properly teaching and using the e-collar is much more than just simply strapping it on and pressing buttons. There is so much nuance and conditioning involved.

We’ve had countless dogs come to us, some who have even been to other trainers, that have absolutely no actual understanding of the tools they are wearing.

I also have the hope that maybe someone will see it who is curious about the e-collar or might want to take their training to the next level but is hesitant from common misconceptions or even past experiences involving the tool.

Because at the end of the day that’s all it is: a tool.

One of the most useful and versatile tools in dog training.

If taught correctly, you have an invisible leash on your dog that can reach through obstacles and over distances greater than any physical one ever could.

It opens up the entire world to you and your dog, and we’ve seen the confidence that comes with it.

Make no mistake, it’s not all rainbows and low-level stimulation though.

With the e-collar, you have a complete spectrum of levels (1-100) to communicate with at your literal finger tips that could stop your dog from running into the road from a football field away and save their life, at the small price of a second of discomfort from a proper collar correction.

I could go on for days, but I never want to try to sell something to someone.

We use what we use because it works. Period.

And I will always be transparent about every aspect.

The point is, if you’ve ever been curious about the e-collar or maybe how we start it, this is it.

Welcome to Thompson K9, Brody! 🐾

Brody is an almost 3-year-old German Shepherd (mix?). He will be in training with us for the next 4 weeks to work on his overall mindset and neutrality. He’s a very smart and sweet dog, but he is easily distracted and overaroused, leading to pretty explosive reactivity (especially towards dogs), running the fence line and barking defensively, and getting so caught up in sniffing that he won’t come when called. He has escaped his invisible fence and is intense about pulling on leash when he wants to be.

His owners want him to behave in public the way he does in the house, which he is absolutely capable of with proper guidance and practice. We’re excited for the opportunity to help this dude be his best self!

Since Brody was a rescue, his owners don’t know for sure what his breed composition is. We have our suspicions based on his appearance and behavior, but what do you see? If you think he’s mixed, comment below what breed(s) you think!

During her B&T, Nova learned that certain thresholds (doors to outside, the door of her crate, etc.) are hard boundaries. That means no darting out just because she feels like it or thinks she can.

For a dog like her with a history of running away - and who is small and fast enough that she could easily sneak out unnoticed - understanding this boundary and practicing impulse control are critical skills.

So whether a door is opened intentionally and she will eventually be invited out, or a door is left open on accident, none of that should cue her to go outside. She has learned to sit and wait at the threshold until invited out by her handler.

Is your dog rude and pushy at the door? Do they try to drag you outside when you’re about to go out for a walk or potty break? Are you worried that if the door isn’t fully latched shut, your dog will take off? Deliberately working on setting clear expectations for thresholds can make a huge difference.

Meet Olive the Rottweiler! 🐾

Olive is joining us for a 4-week board & train program to work on her overall mindset, manners, on- and off-leash obedience, and crate training. She’s a very confident dog with a lot of drive (she looooves both food and toys), but she’s super pushy and easily becomes over-aroused… which involves escalating mouthiness. She is physically strong and will happily pull against the leash and jump on people, and she’s also very vocal in the crate.

Olive will be learning to rein in and channel her energy more appropriately and to respect her handler, no matter what’s going on or where they are.
