Did you know that the Pope of his time was the one to commission him directly to paint several of the Vatican's rooms?

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known more commonly as Raphael, was an Italian artist & architect of the High Renaissance. Raphael was born in 1483 in Urbino, Italy and spent most of his life creating art in his workshop. Although he died at the age of 37; he left behind an enormous amount of artwork that contributed to the arts profoundly.

Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, they formed the trinity of great masters during the Renaissance. Raphael seems to have been born to be a legendary artist; as he was known to be a child prodigy in the arts.

Did you know that the first Rembrandt painting shown in this post is used by and popularized by the Dutch Masters brand of ci**rs?

Rembrandt was a renowned Dutch artist that melded the earthly and spiritual with great ease. He is known as one of the most important Dutch baroque painters of his time, alongside Vermeer.

Rembrandts' work contributed to the Dutch Golden Age. His work followed several motifs, including: mystical, spiritual, historical, and autobiographical, and allegorical themes.

Although his paintings are most widely recognized; he also produced many etchings.

Rembrandt is known for wonderful attention to detail in his paintings and for being able to masterfully convey emotion in his work overall.

Alphonse Mucha was a Bohemian and Czech painter who lived in Paris during the Art Noveau period.

He is best known for his unique work and theatrical posters most famously depicting the actres Sarah Bernhardt.

He did several decorative panels and illustrations, and is particularly famous for his work during the Art Noveau period, much to his chagrin.

According to Mucha's son, his father greatly disliked Art Noveau because he felt that art can never really be new.

Most of Muchas works are allegorical paintings that convey the aspect of beauty. Even with his disdain towards the art movement; his work helps define and depict the essence of the period.

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch Baroque period painter who employed a great and skillful use of many colors and achieved a realistic quality in all his work. Did you know that he had no formal training in the arts? 🎨

There are art critics that argue that he had to have used a camera obscura to achieve the photorealistic quality in his portrait paintings, because of his lack of formal training.

A camera obscura is actually not a camera per se, but instead a darkened room that has a small viewing hole or lens at one side through which an image is projected onto a wall or table opposite the hole.

We featured his famous "The Girl With A Pearl Earring", c. 1665 because of its timeless & iconic beauty. We also included "View of the Delft", c.1659-1661, because it is only one of two cityscape paintings that he did.

Henry Rousseau is one of the most iconic and popular French impressionist painters. Rousseau did not begin painting seriously until his forties and was widely ridiculed during his lifetime. Rousseau is also known as "Le Douanier" from his time as a toll and tax collector.

What is perhaps most amazing about Rousseau is that he is a self-taught artist. He received ridicule throughout his life because he was self-taught and because he approached painting with a very unique and personal sense. Amazingly, his avant-garde & Impressionist style is easily distinguishable today, making him one of the most iconic painters to ever live.

He has been recognized as an artist of the highest caliber and his work is extremely valuable both historically and monetarily. A Rousseau sold for $2.8 million dollars in 1998!

His work even inspired Picasso and several of the Surrealist painters, and continues to provide inspiration for many artists today.

Charles Ethan Porter studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City and is one of the greatest American artists. He was a master of still-life painting and the only African-American artist to paint still-life before 1900.

A common motif of Porter was to paint landscapes and flowers; as is evident from most of his work. He taught painting in Connecticut all while painting some of his most popular and iconic works.

We included Porters art in our Fine Art bookmark set as examples of the American and especially African-American contribution to the Arts. 🎨

Katsushika Hokusai is a renown Japanese artist. He was a ukiyo-e painter and a printmaker.

Ukiyo-e artists painted scenes of history, folklore, flora & fauna, and erotica on woodblocks. This style was particularly famous and prominent during the strict and legendary Edo era of Japan.

A Hokusai painting is easily worth $1.6-$2 million dollars today. "The Great Wave" is one of his iconic works and is still hugely popular today. 🌊

Edgar Degas is a famous impressionist artist known for his lively oil paintings and pastel drawings. He is one of the founders of Impressionism and helped pave the way for countless other works in the art movement.

A very common motif for his work revolves around the subject of dance. (More than half of all his works depicted dancers/dancing).

A master of depicting movement in his work, he also did several racecourse drawings: of horses and jockeys. Later in his life, he began making works including female nudes as a way of further depicting modern life at his time.

Degas referred to his artwork as realism, rather than impressionism; given the lively expression that is ever present in the style.

Manuel Panselinos was a Greek fresco and icon painter that championed the Palaiologan Renaissance movement.

Born in Thessaloniki, he studied at the Macedonia School of Painting. Panselinos' works followed the iconographic motif and are found in several monasteries in the Mount Athos area in Greece.

Byzantine style art popularized the 2D style halos used throughout the movement. This art era helped beautify, preserve and inspire the Christian ideologies of salvation and faith.
