Golden Gate Basset Rescue

GGBR rescues, restores and rehomes Basset Hounds across northern California. NO PREMISES - WE ARE FOSTER HOME BASED. We exist solely on donations.

As a non-political organization, the views of our Board, volunteers and supporters are personal to those individuals and do not reflect the views of our non-profit. We were formed in 2005 after operating for nearly ten years under the Northern California Basset Hound Club. Today, GGBR is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization. GGBR takes orphaned bassets into foster care, usually in volunteer ho

mes, where they are loved and cared for until permanent, forever homes are found. We provide veterinary care, which includes necessary vaccinations, spaying and neutering, heartworm prevention, flea and tick prevention. Our hounds are microchipped with 24PetWatch.com microchips, and when adopted out come with 30 days gift insurance cover courtesy of ShelterCare. Our wonderful volunteers spend time with the dogs to evaluate them, deal with any behavioral issues, and restore them to full health with good food and love.

A little about me…

Mairzy Doats was adopted from GGBR at the age of 3 and lived a great life until we lost her at the age of 11 1/2. She HATED dressing up in costumes but every year Ellen Hongo would get her slippers and I would get the costume to match (rabbit, duck, etc.). She indulged us but was not pleased and hoped every year that Ellen would not be able to find new boosties and that I would not be able to find the costume to match.

Meet calendar contestant Stanley, 1.5 years old from Loudon, TN.

A little about me…

Stanley is the newest hound to our family. His parents have been a foster home for GGBR until we recently moved to Tennessee. He has big shoes to fill from the bassets that came before him. He now lives on a lake and is learning to enjoy life on the pontoon boat; preferably on the boat and not in the water, unless on a floaty. We will miss being a foster home in Bay Area but will never forget the bassets that have come thru our home and the foster fails.

Lowla Huell on her daily sniffari through the neighborhood. Her dad follows along wherever Lowla’s nose leads them, usually a long and winding path!
Lowla turned 10 years old this year. You would never know it! She’s hearty and healthy.
While she is not a GGBR alumni, she loves to support her favorite rescue by entering the calendar competition every year.

A little about me…

While working in the yard the other day, I turned around to find my dear Bruno watching me from the doggie door. It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year since this goofy guy joined our family. With his happy little noises when I get home from work, his sudden zoomies when he realizes it’s bed time, and his pitiful face when he’s waiting to have his snood taken off after meals, Bruno makes me laugh every day. He’s super cuddly and a professional couch potato. I’m so thankful to GGBR for rescuing this little love bug, and to his foster home for taking such good care of him.

Olive is a GGBR wonderful addition to our family. She just celebrated her second year with us and has found a new favorite spot on the couch. She is still over-exuberant in her greetings, has us trained to do whatever she feels is needed, like cleaning her eyes, and is a great companion to our other basset who is 11 now.

A little about me…

Not a rescue, but has stolen my heart. He is the sweetest, bossiest, goofy dog. He loves his cat brother and hates water. He’s a very picky eater and very demanding when he’s hungry. The best thing about him is he thinks he’s a little pup and wants to curl up on my lap on the couch, he’s only 50 lbs so why not.

2026 GGBR Calendar Contest!

Meet calendar contestant Layla, 11 years old from Caro, Michigan.

A little about me…

Layla was an owner surrender and we adopted her through the Michigan Basset Hound Rescue when she was 5. She had 4 litters of puppies by the time we adopted her. With so much loose skin, her belly dragged on the ground and it had to be uncomfortable for her. When we had her spayed, our vet also completed her first tummy tuck on a dog. The surgeries were successful.

I’ve had many dogs over the years. Layla is our first Basset Hound and we have been spoiled. She rarely barks, doesn’t slobber, she’s great with cats and she doesn’t dig. She is a little stubborn, but we can deal with that.

Layla is a certified therapy dog. She’s now retired, but she loved going to the nursing homes and putting smiles on the residents.

Layla is very spoiled, as she should be. She steals my recliner whenever she can and if I’m already sitting in it, I have a 65 pound lapdog. Of course I don’t mind, I built steps so she can climb up more easily.

Now that she’s retired, a good part of her day involves sleeping and going for slow walks around the farm.
