t on the success of the Humane Society of Marion County. The Humane Society of Marion County is a non-profit no-kill shelter dedicated to the care and protection of animals in Marion County, Florida. We’ve come a long way since our humble beginnings in 1964 with a couple of foster homes and a few good people with a burden to care for these helpless creatures. The first facility, built-in 1979 was located about 15 miles west of Ocala off Hwy 200 in the blackjack woods where very few people lived. Today, this area is very heavily populated and continues to grow.

This sugary sweetheart came to us as a foster momma, raising her tiny gumdrops with love. After bravely undergoing eye removal surgery, Candy never lost her sparkle — she bounced back with more sweetness and sass than ever! 💪💕

With her plush fur coat and marshmallow-soft heart, Candy is the perfect mix of playful pop rocks and snuggly caramel. 🍓🐱 She’s got just the right amount of sass, a curious spirit, and an endless supply of cuddles!

The Humane Society of Marion County is facing a serious dog safety issue. One of our most loved play yards has developed a sinkhole, making it unsafe for the dogs who use it daily for exercise, enrichment, and socialization.

This yard is an important space for our pups, and losing it—even temporarily—has a big impact on their wellbeing. 💔

Our Story

The Humane Society of Marion County is a non-profit no-kill shelter dedicated to the care and protection of animals in Marion County, Florida. We have been serving homeless and neglected animals in Ocala and Marion County for over 40 years. We’ve come a long way since our humble beginnings in 1964 with a couple of foster homes and a few good people with a burden to care for these helpless creatures. The first facility, built in 1979 was located about 15 miles west of Ocala off Hwy 200 in the black jack woods where very few people lived. Today, this area is very heavily populated and continues to grow. Shown below is a picture of the first facility, taken shortly after the facility opened.

Our Shelter is home to many cats and dogs. We employ an application process to screen our potential adopters. This process is to ensure that the adopter and the adoptee are compatible and that both animal and humans have the best opportunity for a successful relationship.

Our Shelter receives many kittens and puppies that are just too young to thrive in a shelter environment and need the tender loving care of human attention to give them a good start. Some of these young ones come in with mama and litter mates, some are found abandoned and all alone. We take care of all medical care for these fosters. All you need to do is provide a warm, safe home with lots of kibble and hugs until they are old enough to be adopted.
