Rex is past his euthanasia deadline, so I took him outside for what may be the last time 💔
✅Please see trainer eval on the last slide!
Rex has been locked in a section of the shelter that isn’t publicly accessible because he started his stay as VERY reactive in his kennel. HOWEVER, today when I went to take him out, he didn’t pretend to be big and scary. He took treats nicely and allowed himself to be leashed with very minimal effort. Immediately when we got to the yard, he had big zoomies and was very excited to finally be outside. He was all loose-body and tail wags.
Rex is also VERY excited about treats, though he does take them gently (and catches them!). He knows how to sit, and I bet he knows other commands as well though he is likely rusty. When he wasn’t getting treats, Rex was all about the love. He climbed onto my lap several times for attention and has no hesitation about squishing his face into yours to kiss you. I am covered in slobber (who needs showers??). He allows (understatement) me to pet him all over and is quite enthusiastic about it. We also discovered Rex’s love for the hose (see video) 🤣 He loves to chomp the water and get his whole face blasted, which cleaned the goopies from his eyes!
In Rex’s trainer evaluation, he tested well with dogs but was very forward and rude, as many bullies are. Today, he was very focused on a cat in the other yard and tried to chase it along the fence when it moved, so I recommend no cats for him.
I do not think that as a whole Rex is a difficult dog. He will need a strong handler as he is very strong, and he will need slow intros with dogs. My only large concern after spending time with him today is that he has a bit of stranger danger through the fence, seen when a staff member left and came back. He jumped at the fence and barked and was relatively unsettled and nervous about her when she came back. It was remedied with a treat pretty easily, but he may not do well being bombarded with new people surprising him in his home. Please be prepared for him to need to warm up to strangers, especially in his home.
Rex is a very deserving boy— he deserves a second chance with a bully breed experienced family ready to shower him with love! He has no time left so if you can, please consider him 😭💔
