Watch how we teach this high drive, intense Hungarian Import K9 how to drop a reward. When we say intense, we literally mean this K9 would do ANYTHING for this kong including never letting go!. This has been a pretty cool process to watch unfold. It's important for many reasons that they release under command!

"Obedience to odor": The dog is committed to following and indicating the presence of that odor above all else, even if the handler inadvertently tries to redirect or influence the dog otherwise.

Why it matters:
Avoids handler bias: Sometimes handlers can unconsciously influence the dog’s behavior. A dog that has obedience to odor won’t be swayed by human cues or expectations—it reacts only when it detects the trained odor.

Improves reliability: It ensures the dog’s indication (alert) is based on a real scent detection, not on the environment or handler signals.

Example:
If a handler accidentally cues the dog toward a specific car, but the odor isn't present there, a dog with strong obedience to odor will ignore the cue and continue searching elsewhere until it finds the true source of the target scent.

When looking to become a K9 handler are you looking for a title? Or to better the profession? If the answer is the 2nd one then the first step is to drop your ego! It's ok to have pride in what you love and do but ego will ruin every new opportunity to learn and excel in the field. Just because a trainer you went to does it this way or so and so does it that way doesn't mean those are the only ways, the right ways, or the wrong ways! I always say, if I have 12 dogs trained by 12 different trainers and all 12 dogs do their job and find odor, tracks a missing person, or apprehend a suspect then who cares how they are trained. Stay humble, stay hungry, stay motivated and stay safe out there!

Beans is currently developing a strong obedience foundation with her trainer, Shannon. While obedience is often associated with basic commands such as sit, down, and stay, its importance extends far beyond these fundamental aspects. Obedience serves as a foundation that can be built upon and tailored to meet specific daily requirements. To achieve optimal results, training must be seamlessly integrated into daily life. The process can be likened to constructing a house, where trainers establish the foundation, and owners are responsible for completing that house!
