Right before I got this photo Finn was sleeping on his side and Resolute was standing like this right behind him taking a soft nap.
These two are starting to look like a 2 up team 😆

First ride in about 5-6 months and this is how he hits the trail 🥰 He was so excited to be out, he wanted to explore everything, take every side trail and this horse doesn’t miss a thing! I can always count on him to let me know what’s going on out there. Calm and confident and always seems to enjoy an adventure together ♥️

With the Fell pony it’s rare to have to be concerned about them being on the rich sweet valley grasses when the Autumn rains return.
Pure enjoyment for horses and this human ♥️

This video is back from when I was teaching this guy this move but the other day I decided to see if he still remembered. He was loose in his paddock at a new barn, different fence, no treats and I was delighted to see his willingness to play again 🙂

Working with horses both training and teaching humans over the years I think a lot about how to communicate with horses and humans about horses. It’s a key for relationship and with horses we are learning another language that is also mostly nonverbal and often times (at least we hope) very subtle. Building our awareness as humans is a cornerstone.
When I teach I’m realizing more and more this is both my quest for understanding and primarily what I am trying to teach humans about. Sure riding technique and how to feed and walk with and care for a horse but ultimately the core is about learning these deeper skills. Some people call it “feel”, I would go as far as calling it sacred. These pieces can dramatically improve all of the other pieces . It’s the thing I’m always trying to improve my skills in and the piece I’m always trying to figure out how to teach to the people I work with.
Working on how to listen and communicate with another being that is so different than us in so many ways, as well as how to communicate in ways that make sense and promote learning how to function well in the predominantly human world (let’s be real, almost entirely we ask horses to function within our ideas). Horses are often big and powerful creatures and for the most part incredibly kind and forgiving- humans relied heavily on these qualities. Many horse’s spirits also lend themselves to be “broken” making them compliant with our ideas- they have mastered the ability of dissociation.
Learning to truly partner with a horse is quite possibly the true art of horsemanship.

Awe these two 💗
Amanda and Zinc started working with me maybe 1 1/2 years ago or so. We got started bc we went to a roping clinic together and Zinc was struggling. He had super bad separation anxiety to the point he can easily escalate to being a very unsafe horse to be around. This was especially heartbreaking bc he is actually quite a gem!! super sweet! Very smart! And highly curious!! He is in his late teens now and got his start as a ranch horse who got passed through the auction system and finally finally ended up with this amazing human pictured here with him. I won’t go into Amanda’s journey here but she had something stirring in her before we met to do something different with her horse. She could see how shut down he had been as well as having some scary experiences doing stuff with Zinc. He is the type who will internalize as long has he can and when he can’t handle it any more, or if his coping mechanism gets removed, he explodes and humans no longer matter or really even exist. This seems to be a long standing pattern for him bc he had some horrible known accidents and injuries due to humans trying to control his behavior. Like horrible to the point I won’t write them out here in this story 💔BUT Zinc is incredibly resilient and so intelligent and a happy guy by nature so even after years and years living like this he is opening up to a new way of being and it is incredible to watch and be a part of!!

When we started Zinc didn’t want to load in a trailer and he would start to panic if he didn’t have another horse ( preferably his best friend Joe) right next to him. Over the course of our time working together he now loads up in the trailer, even by himself and we have gotten to the point we are able to start getting him out on solo adventures 🤯🙌🏼 I’m not sure this totally translates to what a big deal this is but it is pretty incredible!! And to see his curiosity and confidence coming alive is such a gift!! He seems to have started to really enjoy getting out on the trail and being present in the experience instead of just getting through it. I’m so honored to work with these two and thank you Amanda for giving me this chance and trusting the process ♥️ your commitment to your horse’s well being is inspiring!!!
