Preserving and improving the Australian Shepherd Breed
Some people think breeding should be illegal, and honestly, with how many irresponsible breeders are out there, I understand why. It’s heartbreaking.
But here’s the truth: ethical breeders are the reason some breeds still exist today.
We spend countless hours reducing health risks, supporting families, preventing shelter surrenders, always taking our puppies back if needed, and preserving what makes each breed special.
If you’re looking for a puppy, please find a breeder who’s in it for the right reasons, not just someone with “ASAP puppies ready or for cheap or aww it’s cute!.”
You play a much bigger role in the future of pedigree breeds than you might realize.
I know some are disappointed that I’m cutting back on certain things, and not breeding for “what buyers want.” But being ethical means doing what’s best for the breed, not what’s trendy or easy. Some choices made for color or demand can cause problems years later, and I refuse to compromise the health and integrity of this breed for popularity and how quick they go out the door. I am one of the few breeders left figuring this out the right way while others are making a mess of it.
There isn’t many of us truly working together to see this breed succeed. Many of the issues we face today came from breeding for what sold, not what was right.
Even after being around Australian Shepherds over 20 years as an owner and now 5 years as a breeder, I’m still learning and growing. There’s a lot of work ahead, but we’ll get there — in time.
Understand that we don’t just need “standards.” We need true standards that reflect the look, heart, and history of what the Australian Shepherd was meant to be.
This is why so many good kennels are closing their doors because it’s no longer worth the emotional, physical, and financial strain when the wrong people are being supported and trust me you do not see everything behind the scenes for what we do. I’m doing everything I can to stick around and continue improving this breed, but it’s not easy.
So please, do your research, be a responsible pet owner, and support those doing it the right way, and remember: when you buy based only on price or what is available fast, you’re not saving money or helping; you’re supporting the fakes instead of the real ones.
