MEMORIAL MONDAY
The last few weeks have been rough for some of our adopters as they’ve had to say “until we meet at the rainbow bridge “.

Some of those furry friends came to us in the early days and lived a wonderful long life and others came later in life and had less time, but every single one was loved beyond measure and we are so grateful to their adopters and the amazing love and care they gave to this amazing breed. We are so very sorry for each of your losses.

Among the recent losses is our forever foster Captain, who came to us 5 years ago at an estimated age of 10! His story is a common one among rescue, found as a stray on the side of the road in TN and taken to a shelter where the chances of a senior dog finding a home a very slim.

He landed a place with a wonderful foster who was mourning the recent loss of her Doberman. He helped her heal from only that but traveled with her when her mother was ill and passed away. Through it all he was by her side and she was by his until the very end.

Captain was grouchy at times, set in his ways, did exactly what he wanted to do and nothing he didn’t 🤣. He didn’t like other dogs, would put on a whole show at the vet, and had no regrets about it 😅 (he was a GenXer in a past life). None of that mattered to his mom though, she loved him exactly the way he was and returned the love.

SHDR covered his final costs to include private cremation and he is now back at home with his mom where he belongs. Thank you Deborah for the unwavering love you showed this crotchety old man and giving him the best days of his life!

If you’d like to make a donation in honor of Captain or your own best furry friend, it is always appreciated ❤️

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Please read this in its entirety as it is, and without assumptions.
This year marks our 10th year in operation and it has been an incredible journey that would’ve never been possible without the support of every single one of you! We have had our share of trials and tribulations like all other rescues but we have also had the opportunity to help so many great and well deserving Dobermans find their forever homes.

As a board, we have continued through COVID, medical issues, deployments, and personal losses. We have also witnessed our members do the same; all while giving dogs a chance that otherwise would’ve never had one. Y’all have helped us with hoarding situations, extreme medically needy dogs, and the nonstop influx of dogs needing rescue.

When Tom and I started this rescue 10 years ago, we never imagined there would be such a need, and to be honest, it’s only grown over the years. With a growing need for rescue comes a growing need for help, and our volunteers have more than stepped up over the years.

My day job is a therapist and I educate about burnout and compassion fatigue. The truth is we are all experiencing it at some level. Between the ever growing animal welfare crisis and the decline in donations and adoptions, we are making the decision to restructure. We will be shifting gears from fostering and adoptions to community support and education…at least that is our goal.

What does look like?
We want to help other rescues and private owners with expenses for unexpected medical costs as well as spay and neuters. Additionally, we hope to provide support in emergent situations where temporary boarding may be needed. Lastly, we will continue to network dogs in need of homes.

What does this mean for our dogs? Dogs in foster care will remain in foster care until adopted. Nothing will change. We are NOT shutting down and we are NOT moving dogs from foster homes to transfer out. This also applies to forever fosters. We will continue to provide for their needs as we always have.

What does this mean for approved adopters? It simply means that the dogs currently available are the only ones available. We will not be bringing anymore into rescue unless they are returning dogs that we have already worked with and adopted out. We understand this may be disappointing, but we have great dogs still available. We are happy to connect anyone approved to adopt to other rescues. We will be in talks with our partner rescues throughout the south to “reciprocate” approval across rescues when possible to make the process smoother. Every group has their own rules, so approval is not guaranteed, but we can certainly provide that information.

What does this mean for those who have already adopted? Nothing will change. We are still here to support everyone who has adopted from us. The community page will remain and we ALWAYS want to see allll the pictures!

What does this mean if you need to return a dog? We will network with our approved fosters and adopters to find a placement for your dog. Failing that, we will work with trusted rescue resources to find placement. We still want to be notified if there is ever a need to return a dog. Once a SHDR dog, always a SHDR dog. OUR DOGS MUST STILL COME BACK TO US IF THEY NEED TO BE RETURNED!!! This change in direction does NOT negate or amend anything in your adoption or fostering contracts. Everything is still applicable as it stands.

I will also continue to provide education on pet loss and grief to our community members and followers as it is not talked about enough.

Please understand this decision has not been made lightly or on a whim. The board has spent many hours trying to find any way possible to continue our mission and this is where we have landed. This has been an incredibly difficult decision to make. As the founder, I never thought this would be something we had to do but logically it is the best decision for not only our board, but all of our volunteers and the rescue as a whole.

Please consider still supporting us as donations will still be needed in order to support our new path. Again, we appreciate every single one of you and we are excited to experience this new venture with you! Thank you SO MUCH for an amazing ten years. We hope to keep fighting for these dogs and our communities that love them as we move forward. Once the details for the application process for grants is completed, it will be available on our website along with the form to request networking a dog in need.

We will be releasing merch soon highlighting our new mission to support our endeavors so please look for them!

It’s FOSTER FRIDAY!!!

And today is all about PRANCER!!!

We can’t figure out why this guy is still in rescue. He’s handsome, he’s chill, and he is INCREDIBLY loving. The only thing that we can figure is folks are wary of his condition.

We know the word “Wobblers” can make people nervous, but here’s the thing: we’re not 100% sure that that’s what’s going on with Prancer. He has not declined in stability or cognizant function since he came into rescue a whopping seven months ago. He’s always going to move a little slower and need a little more time to get up and around, but there’s nothing wrong with that! He lives his life as a happy, normal dog. He holds his own with his three foster brothers, and they don’t hold back either!

There’s some unexpected benefits to a pup with mobility limitations. For one: Prancer won’t ever be caught counter surfing or jumping up on people! He needs as many paws on the ground as possible 🤣 You also don’t need to worry about him dragging you along when on a leash. Concerned about a dog darting out of a gate or door? Not a problem with this fella!

Prancer is good with other dogs his size and other calm and quiet pets. He LOVES kids!! He has been sweet and gentle every single time he’s met a little one. He is house and crate trained, neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccines. What’s not to love?

If you want to bring this loving, wobbly hunk of love home with you, apply today at sweethomedobermanrescue.org/adoption!

Who here remembers KEVIN!

Kevin, now known as Devereaux, came to SHDR in 2021 as a stray out of Georgia. It’s honestly a miracle he was even identified as a Doberman at all, with his fawn coat, all natural ears and tail, and his… *unique* looks 🤣

Devereaux went from skinny and wormy to healthy, happy, and FULL of energy and mischief. He eventually came to live with an adopter who now serves on the Board of Directors for the rescue! This lumpy gray dog is the whole reason our adoption and foster director got into rescue at all. She fell in love with that slightly-lopsided face and the rest is history 🥰

If you want to celebrate his gotcha month AND support our cause (or that of any other deserving rescue!!), check out his feature at Doberman Coffee Company! Devereaux is one of their Dogs of the Month for July. You can select his name when checking out to directly donate $5 of your purchase right back to SHDR. We recommend checking out the other awesome rescues being represented this month as well!

Partnerships like these are so critical for rescues, and the goods from Doberman Coffee Co. are great quality to boot! Go get your dog some “lumpy nuggets” today and give back so we can keep helping dogs like Devereaux and many many more ❤️

🩰 SUGARPLUM 🩰

Hey! I’m Sugarplum, an eight month old female Doberman puppy.

I'll be honest, I've been in rescue for most of my life! My memory isn’t too great, but I’ll tell y'all what these rescue folks told me! At some point when I was with my litter, my mom either bit me or stepped on me and my head got stuck kinda crooked. I could still get around, but I was real wobbly and it was hard to compete with my siblings for food. They started ganging up on me because I walked funny, so I was taken to a shelter. I was only there for a couple hours before some really nice people came and scooped me right up! I got to spend the holidays in a wonderful foster home, but my problems were just getting started! I wasn’t able to keep food down after a couple weeks, so I went to the vet. Turns out I have this thing called mega esophagus that keeps me from swallowing well. I've grown up real strong and healthy though, so I'm able to eat normally so far. As I grew up, my head straightened out a lot too! Now I can mostly walk in a straight line. I’ve got a few challenges, but I am a spunky little thing with a strong will to live. I like other dogs, people, and have been around cats as well! I am still a puppy though, so I will need training and socialization to help me curb my energy and keep learning to be a great pup. I can't promise I won't need some extra help in the future, but for now I'm ready for my next adventure! Is that with you?

**Sugarplum will need a home with prior experience with special needs or a strong willingness to learn. Prospective adopters are asked to keep in mind her existing conditions and the possibility for them to evolve as she matures.**

If you are interested in adoption, apply today at sweethomedobermanrescue.org/adoption!

🚨$2 TUESDAY🚨

We are back asking for your help once again! Although we haven't been taking in new dogs, we still have dogs who need medical treatment so they can be ready for their forever homes.

Currently, Barton, Dasher, and Zarra need heart worm treatment and our little Sugarplum needs her spay. Putting that into real terms, heartworm treatment averages $750. We follow the heart worm society protocol which involves more than just injections. This method has proven to be the safest for our dogs and has always been our choice of treatment. While other methods are more cost effective, we are not looking to change. That brings our total to approximately $2300 for 3 dogs to receive treatment.

Sugarplum, our Mega-E girl has all but outgrown her eating issues and is ready for her spay! That can range from $350-$500.

These costs don't include the upkeep for our forever fosters and other vetting needed such as updating vaccines etc.

We are setting a goal of raising $1500 (or more) to be earmarked for these 4 pups to get what they need in the final leg of preparing to be adopted. ANY amount helps! With 16,000 followers that could be easily reached! Please help us help them. As always thank you all for your support ❤️

11/06/2025

For today’s Awareness Wednesday, we want to bring attention to something most Doberman owners know about but prefer not to think about until they absolutely have to: DCM.

DCM, or dilated cardiomyopathy, is one of the most common causes of death in Dobermans. DCM is a serious heart condition in dogs that causes the heart's lower chambers to enlarge, making it harder to pump blood. This condition can be managed with medication and lifestyle changes if caught early, but it can often ramp up in severity very rapidly, leading to sudden and unexpected deaths.

While any dog can develop this condition, it can also be genetic, and these genes are very often found among the Doberman breed. Nearly 60% of all Dobermans will develop DCM in their lifetimes. We have preached at length about reputable and responsible breeding, but the fact about this condition is that it can pop up in just about any dog, be it a dog off the street or a pedigreed pup from show or working lines.

For the first time Doberman owner, this condition should be kept in mind when adopting. As a rescue, we do not have the resources or funds to screen our dogs for the genes that contribute to DCM, and while we strive to get our fosters as healthy as they can be prior to adoption, we sadly don’t usually know if or when they may develop DCM down the line. This is why we ask if applicants have contingency plans in place for expenses that may come into play in the event that these conditions are found later in life.

DCM is another reminder to have your pets seen by a vet regularly and to look closely for signs of issues before they get to a point of no return. There is no cure for DCM, but with early detection and management, some dogs have been able to get back to a mostly normal state and live long, happy lives. Advancement in screenings and genetic testing are helping vets and owners catch DCM earlier and earlier, improving outcomes for many.

The University of Minnesota’s Disappearing Doberman Project is collecting data on Dobermans to track their health and the prevalence of certain conditions, chief among them DCM. If you own a Doberman and would like to contribute to a better understanding of these conditions, you can learn about the study and register on UMN’s website here: https://vetmed.umn.edu/equine/research/equine-genetics-and-genomics-laboratory/canine-projects/disappearing-doberman

On a personal note, we have sadly lost several SHDR alumni in the past couple of months, including losses from DCM. Hopefully one day we will be able to pinpoint and eradicate the root of this and other diseases that take our beloved pups from us far too soon.

Donner is looking for donations for his fellow dobies who are going through heartworm treatment. I tried to tell him he won’t find them there, but promised I would make a post asking our followers for help!

It can be easy to forget that funds are needed beyond intake, but they are. Besides heartworm treatment, we still have to keep vaccines current, provide food when needed, and we currently have two dogs working with trainers. No amount is too small!

This is our 10th year in operation and we couldn’t have done it without your support ❤️

🐎 BARTON 🐎

Boy howdy! I’m Barton, a three year old male Doberman.

I gotta tell ya, this rescue stuff is where it’s at! I was picked up as a stray in central Alabama. I was HUNGRY out there on the streets! Luckily I got a golden ticket into rescue, and I’m getting lots of good food now! I really like people and dogs are pretty neat too! Sadly I am heartworm positive, so I’ll have to be treated for those once I’m healthy enough. One day I’ll have a forever home all of my own. I know one thing though - I ain’t ever gonna be hungry again!

I am NOT ready for adoption, but if you would like to be considered for when I am, apply TODAY at sweethomedobermanrescue.org/adoption!
