PYTHIOSIS WARNING!
4 recently reported cases in dogs in Manatee/Sarasota County.
Also known as "Swamp Cancer".

I have seen several of these cases over the years and it's devastating. So let's break this down for everyone because this is quite concerning...

WHAT IS IT?
It's a water mold closely related to red algae. (reports erroneously call it fungus)

WHO DOES IT AFFECT:
mostly dogs and horses, (rarely cats, sheep, and humans)

METHOD OF TRANSMISSION:
swimming, wading in affected waters.

WHAT ARE THE CLINICAL SIGNS?
It usually affects the Skin or the GI tract.
GI Pythiosis: fever, vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea, regurgitation, and abdominal mass(es).
Cutaneous Pythiosis: skin sores that won't heal, large skin nodules/masses. Often on the limbs, tail and neck.
Other signs: multiple organ involvement including lung infections, large lymph nodes, neurologic signs and sudden death.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE?
Biopsy / Histopathology of the affected tissues,
ELISA blood test

TREATMENT:
Medical therapy alone is usually ineffective and often surgery is required - such as amputation of the limbs, abdominal surgery removing affected bowel

PROGNOSIS
Only 15% survive - with aggressive treatment!

Pythiosis is NOT considered zoonotic because humans can't get it directly from animals.

Avoid taking your dogs to ponds, swamps, and wetlands.

Charli was in extreme pain, making her examination challenging. She reluctantly walked but was completely non weight bearing on her right hind leg. Oftentimes, our patients with venomous snake bites present like this. However, her vitals were relatively normal and there was absolutely no sign of trauma anywhere on her body.
Surprisingly Radiographs revealed a severely dislocated hip! Due to the severity, “popping” the hip back into place was not an option as the cartilage and ligament was affected. Fortunately, we were able to do an emergency procedure called an Femoral Head Ostectomy a surgical procedure were we remove the head of the femur. The goal of the surgery is to remove the bone on bone contact, allowing pain free mobility of the hip joint. The vast majority of these patient regain full function of their hip with zero pain! During the surgery, we discovered that the location of the luxation was consistent with Charli getting her paw or lower leg stuck in something and quickly pulling it away. Truly a freak and unlucky accident. We are happy to report that the procedure went well! It’s only been a few days, but she’s steadily improving! Charli has an incredibly wonderful family and it’s quite obvious how much she is loved ❤️

Case of the Week!
Meet Charli! Just a few days ago, sweet Charli’s routine morning walk in her yard came to an abrupt halt. She collapsed to the ground, started crying and became super protective of her back leg.
