Bluey came to us after being found injured and alone in a bush. As you know, he had a broken leg, and after consulting with our vet, we moved forward with surgery to place six external pins in hopes of giving him a full recovery.

Unfortunately, yesterday morning Bluey started bleeding heavily from his leg. We rushed him to the vet where they sedated, stopped the bleeding and did another X-ray to see what was going on. It was determined that likely from a sudden, forceful movement, several of the pins broke and caused additional fractures in his leg. At this point, the only remaining option was a splint with less than a 20%-30% chance of proper healing. With heavy hearts, we made the decision to humanely euthanize him to prevent further pain.

Just a few weeks ago, we went through a similar heartbreak with Irwin, a baby emu whose leg surgery also failed. But Bluey was an adult, and his bones were no longer growing, which gave him a really hopeful prognosis. We moved forward based on expert veterinary advice and wouldn’t have pursued the $2,200 surgery if we didn’t believe it could work. Trust us, we know that is a lot of money.

Bluey spent his final days in a foster home where he was safe, loved, and shown compassion—something he may never have known before. He was buried in their yard. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who donated toward his care and gave him the chance to fight.

We’re always learning and doing our best to make informed, compassionate decisions for the animals we rescue. We ask for understanding and kindness as we navigate these situations. Thank you for continuing to support us through the hardest parts of this work. ❤️‍🩹

Bluey wants to thank everyone who has donated toward his medical bills ❤️‍🩹 Just look at that handsome face. So far we have raised $167 of our $2200 goal.

Bluey is doing pretty well, just going through the motions of recovery. He is still not wanting to put a lot of pressure on his leg, but we are doing a recheck at the vet on Friday to make sure things are going in the right direction. In the meantime he’s got pain meds on board and his spunky personality is still coming through. Thank you Kjersten for being such a wonderful foster mom to him.

If anyone is able to donate any amount, Bluey would appreciate any help to pay off his new and improved leg! We are hopeful this will give him a good quality of life that he absolutely deserves. Reminder that donations are tax deductible as Wasatch Wanderers is a registered 501(c)3 (EIN: 32-0689630)

Cute boys Benny and Nezumi are popping in to say “Hi! Adopt us!”

These sweethearts are only 3-4 months old and looking for a home together. Their foster mom says Benny (lighter rat) is a curious, happy kiddo. He is great with human touch and affection and learns your scent quick! Nezumi (darker rat) is a little more shy but has been learning to trust humans and doing really well!

Yesterday our friends West Jordan animal services impounded an injured black and blue pheasant. He was found in a bush in a church parking lot. How he got there or what he was doing there is a mystery, we may never know. He was picked up and brought to the shelter, and they immediately noticed his leg appeared to be broken and he could not put any weight on it. They quickly reached out to see if we could help, and of course we said yes. There are not many options for birds, let alone pheasants In Utah. We really wanted to give him a chance.

We secured transportation for him to our vet at mountain west vet (thank you Quill!) where we named him Bluey. They examined and took x-rays of his leg, and you can see the fracture on the second photo. Luckily, the fracture was in a spot where he has good chances of healing. After a conversation with our amazing vet we determined the best course of action for Bluey was to do surgery. This would give him the best quality of life and as much of a normal leg as possible. Because he is a full grown adult, surgery is expected to be successful since his bone has no more growth, it just has to heal together.

They performed the surgery yesterday and set the bone in place and added 6 pins to hold it together til it heals. It went extremely well, he stayed overnight at the vet for extra monitoring and will be going to his amazing foster today. Now is his road to recovery. ❤️‍🩹 With this surgery comes a fancy new leg for Bluey and a fancy new leg price for us….. We are trying to raise $2200 to cover his surgery, including X-rays and his initial emergency exam fees.

If anyone would like to help this amazing boy pay off his fancy new leg, we are so appreciative of any donations! Can’t donate? Please share!

Introducing Mr. Brisby 🐀

A very kind person noticed this domestic rat living out in the wild and reached out to us (thank you Steph!). Last week, she was able to catch him in a live trap! It turns out he had been living outside for a month. Poor guy. The wild is no place for a domestic animal to try and survive on their own.

Right when we got him our foster noticed wounds and sores on his feet (see last pic), as well as his underbelly. We made an appointment with our vet right away and got him in on Monday morning. Not only does he have these wounds, he is also dealing with an upper respiratory infection. We’ve got him started on antibiotics which is he taking surprisingly well for being so scared and anxious. His foster mom Hannah has been amazing with him. He’s definitely scared and not very human friendly, but we don’t blame him.

We will keep you posted on this little guy as he hopefully progresses 🐀

Right now we have his current vet bill covered 🤍

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ AND SHARE

Hi, True Hearts Fam! We wanted to talk to you about dumped bunny sightings. Being the only fully operative 501c3 rabbit focused rescue in the STATE, we are receiving multiple messages per day about dumped rabbits.

While we wish we could save every single one, we have very limited resources, including funding, fosters, and approved adopters. We are also 100% volunteer run. Both of our founders have full-time, outside of the home jobs. If you are sighting a dumped bunny, please don't message us as the first line of defense. Call animal control in the area you are in, or catch the bunny yourself and take to the shelter.

We realize shelters here have very limited resources and there is currently only one shelter in the state of Utah who fixes and vaccinates rabbits prior to adoption. That shelter does not take strays, only owner surrenders. The shelter situation is clearly not ideal, but it is better than leaving a bunny outside to overheat or die a horrible death by predator. We are in contact with almost every single shelter around the state, and this is commonly how we find the rabbits who need us the most.

However, if you only message us, we may not see your message in a timely manner and will not have the ability to hurry out and catch a bunny. If you are in the area and sighting the rabbit, the rabbit needs YOUR HELP NOW.

Also, if you are mad or upset that we have to say no, please also understand that this is part of what makes us a good rescue. We make sure EVERY SINGLE RABBIT in our care has a foster home with free roam time, the highest quality of vet care available in our state, and the opportunity for us to be picky about choosing their adopter because they always deserve better than where they came from.

Thank you for helping bunnies in our state find better solutions.

This last weekend we had some incredible adoptions! 🦃 🦆🪿

First up we had 10 geese go to their forever home together! They are doing amazing and have so much room to roam. They are already thriving in their decided role of protecting their new duck friends.

Then we had 4 ducks go to their forever homes, including our sweet girl Willow who was recently cleared by our vet! She had been through a lot after that fishing hook injury, and after two surgeries and months of meds, she has been doing amazing. She is so happy in her new home with her bestie Ashe (now Maple) and her new brother.

And!! Our boy Rex the turkey was also cleared by our vet. ♥️ It has been a long journey for this guy after he came to us with multiple wounds all over his body last fall. His foster mom (and now forever mom) has been so wonderful to him and he is thriving.

Last but not least we had two chinchillas Fuzzy and Fiz-Fiz adopted this weekend who are settling in and doing well!

All in all, an incredible weekend for these animals who were given a second chance at life. This is what makes it all worth it. ♥️🥹

Spring has sprung, and here comes the influx of calls, emails and texts! We took in these two babies last week after they were abandoned. They had gone 24 hours without food and were absolutely starving when they got to their foster home. Thankfully they seem to be doing well and are happy and healthy.

Adopter found!
Meet Rosie 🌹
We have some new intakes we haven’t had the chance to introduce yet! Little Rosie here was found outside in a flower pot. She is a young gal, probably a few months or so, and she is such a sweetheart! Her foster mom says she is still a little bit shy but getting comfortable with human love! She loves to sleep in her hammock and watch her foster brothers play in their cage next door. We would love to find her a home with another lady rat to keep her company!

Are you interested in adopting? Fill out our application and reach out with any questions! Rats require a minimum 2’x2’x4’ enclosure with at least two levels and lots of substrate for enrichment.

Introducing Bonnie! 💞

Bonnie is a beautiful female gray partridge who came to us after she recovered from an injury over at the amazing . She was picked up by a kind human after a cat had apparently gotten to her. She can be human friendly, and they believed she had been someone’s pet at some point. They asked if we could help find her a forever home once she healed, and we said of course! She’s currently with one of our awesome fosters, and we’d love to find her a forever family with partridge friends to be with! Could that be you or someone you know? Please share!

It’s with the saddest heart that we have to share this. Along with Irwin’s medical team, we had to make the tough decision to have him humanely euthanized. His leg had rotated back to the point of where we first started. Along with that, he was growing so fast. Even if we did several more surgeries his prognosis was still very guarded. We discussed it and had to think about him and his well being. Surgery can be a lot on an animal and especially a baby. We decided to let him go peacefully to prevent suffering and in the presence of the people who have loved and cared for him since the beginning.

Thank you to everyone who has donated toward Irwin’s medical bills. Because of you we were able to try and give it our best shot. Because of you he got to experience love and wasn’t discarded because of his disability. If you’d like to make a donation in his honor to cover the rest of his bills, any amount is incredibly appreciated.

We’re so sorry we couldn’t do more. Thank you Dr Daugherty, Dr Echols, the staff and his caregivers Michiko and Megan. Rest peacefully now, Irwin. We love you ♥️

31/03/2025

It’s been a while since we posted an Irwin/Erwin (he goes by both spellings lol) update so thank you for your patience! It has been a bit of a rollercoaster the last week.

Little Irwin is a fighter. He has come so far. He had a recheck at the vet to make sure everything was the way it should be and healing ok. During his exam the vet determined he needed to do a minor adjustment to his fixture on his leg to make sure as he grows the leg continues to heal in the correct position. It went really well and we were thrilled! But then a few days later, Irwin broke his cross bars and back slid quite a bit. This caused him to not put pressure on his leg, and because of the decreased mobility and stress he stopped eating on his own. His current caretaker Megan has been hand feeding and watering every 1-2 hours. Emus grow quickly and are very strong which makes this really tough.

On the plus side, the vet thinks they can place more cross pins because his leg is longer and stronger now. This means we may have another surgery and rotate again, but we are going to discuss it this week and go over what will be best for him. We’ll continue taking the advice of the amazing professionals at who know him better than anyone. We are really hoping he can pull through, and we will keep you all updated as often as possible. With all of this of course comes added costs. We have raised just over $600 for his life saving care, and with the added adjustment to his leg his new estimate is around $1,200. This will increase with his next procedure. His vets and techs have donated so much of their time for him, which we are so grateful for. Can you help us continue to give him the life he deserves?
