Bluey came to us after being found injured and alone in a bush. As you know, he had a broken leg, and after consulting with our vet, we moved forward with surgery to place six external pins in hopes of giving him a full recovery.
Unfortunately, yesterday morning Bluey started bleeding heavily from his leg. We rushed him to the vet where they sedated, stopped the bleeding and did another X-ray to see what was going on. It was determined that likely from a sudden, forceful movement, several of the pins broke and caused additional fractures in his leg. At this point, the only remaining option was a splint with less than a 20%-30% chance of proper healing. With heavy hearts, we made the decision to humanely euthanize him to prevent further pain.
Just a few weeks ago, we went through a similar heartbreak with Irwin, a baby emu whose leg surgery also failed. But Bluey was an adult, and his bones were no longer growing, which gave him a really hopeful prognosis. We moved forward based on expert veterinary advice and wouldn’t have pursued the $2,200 surgery if we didn’t believe it could work. Trust us, we know that is a lot of money.
Bluey spent his final days in a foster home where he was safe, loved, and shown compassion—something he may never have known before. He was buried in their yard. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who donated toward his care and gave him the chance to fight.
We’re always learning and doing our best to make informed, compassionate decisions for the animals we rescue. We ask for understanding and kindness as we navigate these situations. Thank you for continuing to support us through the hardest parts of this work. ❤️🩹
