This is so accurate. Your dog is communicating, are you listening?
Dogs have been trying to communicate with humans for thousands of years.
Not with words with their bodies. With the angle of their ears and the speed of their tail and the weight of how they press themselves against you at the end of a difficult day. Most people who live with dogs catch the obvious signals the excited spin by the door, the pleading look at the treat cabinet. But there is an entire second layer of communication happening constantly that most people walk right past.
Once you start seeing it, you cannot stop.
1. They bring you something.
A toy, a sock, a leaf carried all the way from the yard. Dogs bring objects as greeting gifts to people they love. It is not randomness or mischief. It is an offering — a form of hello that needs something in the mouth because the excitement is too large for the body to contain.
2. They lean against you.
Full body contact. A hip pressed to your leg, a shoulder settled against yours on the couch. Dogs lean into people they trust completely. It is physical reassurance given and received at the same time... I am safe with you, and I am here for you.
3. They make soft eye contact and then look deliberately away.
A slow, gentle gaze followed by a calm break is a calming signal, canine body language for "I am not a threat and I trust you." It is one of the most tender things a dog can do. When a dog offers this to a person they love, it is the equivalent of a very quiet declaration.
4. They yawn when you are stressed.
Dogs yawn to self-regulate but also to calm others around them. If you are tense and your dog yawns, they are attempting to lower the emotional temperature of the room. They noticed before you said a word.
5. They sleep touching you.
A dog that presses against you while sleeping has placed you inside its circle of safety. The contact is intentional. For an animal descended from pack creatures who slept in warmth and contact for survival, there is no higher expression of belonging.
6. They follow you from room to room.
This is almost always misread as clinginess. It is not. It is companionship. You are their person. Wherever you are is the right place to be. The following is attentive, not anxious. There is a meaningful difference.
7. They check on you.
A glance up from across the room. A sudden nose against your knee in the middle of a phone call. An appearance at the door after you have been quiet for a while. Dogs monitor the people they love. The check-in is not accidental.
They have been talking this whole time.
We just needed to learn to listen differently.
