I would never have thought that such quiet work would have such impressive results. He’s been amazing since you were here last.” - K.K.

Where’s the “Wow”?

A trainer I work with recently reached out about a horse that had been feeling stiff and reactive during training. He wasn’t moving comfortably, and it was starting to affect their rides.

We scheduled a session, and from the start, the horse responded really well to soft tissue work. He softened, relaxed, and began to let go of tension in a way that felt positive and productive. We finished the session and scheduled a follow-up.

Later, the trainer shared something with me.

After I left, she and the owner talked about the session—as they should. The owner said:

“I wasn’t very impressed. I don’t see how such gentle work can make any significant difference. I just wasn’t ‘wowed’ by it.”

The trainer simply replied:

“Okay… let’s see how he responds.”

The Real Results

About a week later, the trainer returned for their next lesson and asked how the horse had been.

The owner said:

“Excellent. He’s been so good—I’m so happy with him.”

And the trainer replied:

“And there’s your WOW.”

Why It Doesn’t Always Look Impressive

In the equestrian world, there’s often an expectation that effective work should look dramatic.

Big reactions, something you can clearly see, maybe even hear happening. And to be fair, many horsemen incorporate a bit of showmanship into their work as part of how they present and sell what they do. My old coach used to call it “smoke and mirrors”, techniques used by magicians to entertain and draw the eye.

And there’s another idea at play—many of us have been taught, directly or indirectly, that for something to work, it needs to be intense.

“No pain, no gain.”
“Go hard or go home.”

So when we see quiet, gentle work, it can feel like not enough is happening.

But horses don’t live in that mindset. In fact, many of them tell us the opposite—they ask for less.

And when we listen, when we soften, when we do less… we often get more.

But massage and myofascial therapy are different.

When done well, they are:
• Quiet
• Subtle
• Gradual
• Responsive to the horse

There’s no forcing, no wrenching, no sudden impacts.

And while the changes may not always appear dramatic, they are immediate and significant—seen in improved tissue texture, posture, ease of movement and emotional state.

These are meaningful shifts within the nervous system and musculoskeletal tissue, even if they go unnoticed by the untrained eye.

The goal of this type of bodywork isn’t to override the body, but to work with it—safely, effectively, and in a way that supports lasting change.

These changes don’t need to be dramatic to be effective. In fact, they’re often more lasting because they’re not forced.

A Different Way of Looking at Results

It’s completely understandable that some people expect to feel “wowed” during a session—you’re investing in your horse, you want to see that reflected, and many people are used to that being combined with a sort of entertainment experience.

But sometimes, the most effective work doesn’t perform for the human audience.

It allows the horse to process, adjust, and improve in a way that sticks.

In the end, that quiet session—that didn’t seem like much had happened—resulted in a horse that felt great after and was able to safely, kindly and comfortably do his job.

And that’s the kind of “wow” that truly matters.

I frequently assign exercises to horses under my care. Oftentimes cliebts either don't have time to do them or don't see the benefit in performing them. The few who do though, see a much faster improvement and development in their horse's. Poles are one of the best tools we have in order to help so many things from posture to muscle development ☺️

For those wondering about their notes from this past week or two's sessions, they will be in your inbox by the end of the week! It's been crazy this past week, between Buster's cardiology consult and I had 12 clients (and a few dogs too) ontop of my farm job and trying to keep the house from falling into shambles lol 🤪 As usual though, shoot me a text if you need something right away and I always text out anything needing more immediate attention from clients, notes are just highlights and reiterating things I told you if you were there for the sessions 😉

Hopefully everyone is enjoying this beautiful fall weather and gearing up for some Halloween fun! I enjoy sitting outside with my neighbors and passing out treats to the kids and pups out and about, so can't wait ☺️

Pretty cool to see the Hunters gaining some traction overseas now ☺️ I have plenty of hunter-type horses on my books, it's just easier on their joints, especially for those horses that love to jump but have physical limitations. I love watching a good round with a relaxed horse.

While some may find it boring due to the lack of speed, I like seeing what everyone's form and style is over the course. Moving at the slower speeds also allows me to see better what I can do to help my clients further their careers and training; sometimes it's hard to pinpoint those things when they're moving at mach-ten over 4+ foot jumps, I've gotta video and slow it down 😆

Riding horses in the languid, American hunter style has long been dismissed by many speed-loving show jumpers. Now it may be catching on abroad.

For any of my Summit County clients who are not familiar with the truck that rolls through periodically, leaving a fog in it's wake. They frequently spray for mosquitos, which yes can be a nuisance but the unfortunate side effects of this spray can affect all animals and humans alike. It can harm honeybees going about their pollinating, too.

While I understand mosquitos suck, let's be honest, I don't believe this spraying outweighs the negative effects for everyone else around. My epileptic dog has had seizures when he has had to potty within a few hours of a spraying, and I've had migraines and nausea triggered by it. My property is only cared for organically, so the spraying of chemicals on it is not something I take lightly. Due to this, I opt out from spraying, which doesn't guarantee none of it will come in contact with my property but at least we don't get the brunt of it (when they remember to shut off the truck).

If you are within Summit and would like to opt out, follow the link below and fill out the form. It's super quick and easy to protect yourself, your pets and local pollinators ☺️

Summit County Public Health (SCPH) maintains a Do Not Spray registry of residents who do not want to have their property treated for adult mosquitoes through the use of truck-mounted spraying on public roadways and alleys. SCPH will make a good faith effort to shut off truck-mounted spraying equipme...

It has been such a busy month already, especially with so many more county fairs to go! I'll be doing my frequently asked questions posts in September instead as a result. My priority is always my clients first, social media is not exactly high on my list but it honestly seems you need to be engaged in all platforms these days 😅

But since I am posting, just a reminder that I do offer kinesiology taping as needed as part of my sessions. This has proven especially helpful at the moment with swelling triggered by the heat, as well as allergies. Available slots are a little thin at the moment but please reach out and I can try to accommodate you and your horse(s) as soon as possible ☺️

On days like we've had recently of this humid heat, I've been seeing and getting calls about more mysterious swelling and stocking up. There are a multitude of things this can be, and they can be manageable (depending on the severity and how quickly they were caught) with proper vet care and certain modalities applied at the right times in recovery. The most important thing is to stimulate and keep the lymphatic system moving while managing the pain.

I always tell these clients to get a vet diagnosis first, then we can work together to help manage the horse's recovery. This can be anything from: Chronic Progressive Lymphedema, Lymphangitis, Cellulitis, Stagnation Edema, etc. Getting the correct diagnosis and necessary medication(s) from the vet early on is vital in treatment and management of these mysterious swellings.
