“Just vaccines, no spay. I think I want her to have a litter of puppies first.”
When the Scarritt Foundation team was out in the community offering spay and neuter services this week, this was a conversation we heard more than once. But access to care is only part of the solution, education is just as important.
We took the time to talk through her pets health, the realities of overpopulation in Southern Arizona, and the barriers many local families face when trying to access veterinary care. By the end of that conversation, she made the decision to have her Lola spayed that day!
That single decision prevented future litters, reduced strain on our already overwhelmed shelters, and improved the long-term health of her Lola.
This is the impact of combining accessible veterinary services with community based education.
Many pet owners want what is best for their animals, but without access to care and accurate information, those intentions don’t always lead to the best outcomes. Programs like P.U.P Outreach meet people where they are by removing barriers, building trust, and creating immediate, measurable change.
