🐶 What’s REALLY in your dog’s DNA?
In this episode of Discussing Dogs in the D, Tom and I went down the rabbit hole of dog DNA testing after running our dogs through three different companies… and the results were surprising.
We compared:
🧬 Embark
🧬 Wisdom Panel
🧬 DNA My Dog
For our dogs Molly and Boomer, two of the companies had very similar results… but one was completely different. 🤯
So we started asking questions:
• How accurate are dog DNA tests?
• Why do breed percentages vary between companies?
• Can DNA tests really identify siblings and relatives?
We also share the emotional moment when Molly was matched with one of her puppies through DNA, plus the story of how Boomer was matched with what appears to be his sibling.
If you’ve ever wondered what breed mix your dog really is — this episode is for you.

Sometimes the dog you rescue ends up rescuing you. 🐾

In this episode of Discussing Dogs in the D, I sit down with Kara Roberto, founder of Angela’s Treat Stash, to talk about the rescue dog who changed everything. What started as caring for a diabetic foster dog during the pandemic eventually grew into a small business creating natural dog treats loved by pets all over Michigan.

It’s a story about rescue, resilience, and how dogs inspire us in ways we never expect.

In this episode of Discussing Dogs in the D, Christine sits down with Sabrina Stigell from Premier Pet Supply to talk about how a single family-owned pet store grew into fourteen Metro Detroit locations — and what makes their business model so unique.

Episode 2: Volunteering, Dog Ventures & Finding Purpose at Detroit Animal Care and Control

In this episode of Discussing Dogs in the D, Christine sits down with Nicole Biehl, a passionate volunteer with Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control, the nonprofit that supports Detroit Animal Care and Control.

Nicole shares the story of the rescue dog who changed her life and ultimately led her into animal welfare. What started as a single adoption in 2013 turned into a deep commitment to helping shelter dogs find homes—and, just one year ago, a headfirst leap into volunteering at Detroit’s municipal shelter.

Together, Christine and Nicole discuss:

What it’s really like to volunteer inside DACC

The emotional highs and lows of shelter work

How social media (especially TikTok) can help dogs get seen and adopted

The difference between Detroit Animal Care and Control and Friends of DACC

How flexible volunteering makes it possible for busy families to get involved

“Dog ventures” and “slumber parties,” and why even one day out of the kennel can change a dog’s life

How to avoid burnout while staying committed to animal welfare

Nicole also opens up about her three rescue dogs at home—including one with a challenging past—and shares what she’s learned about patience, communication, and respecting a dog’s boundaries.

If you’ve ever wondered how you can help shelter dogs in Metro Detroit—without fostering, adopting, or overcommitting—this episode is your roadmap. From enrichment kits to adoption events to simply taking a dog on an adventure, there are so many ways to make an impact.

🎧 Tune in for an honest, heartfelt conversation about choosing dogs—and what happens when they choose you right back. Link in comments to listen to full episode!
