📚🐾 Did you know kids can read to shelter animals? 🐾📚

Our Book Buddies program gives young readers a fun way to boost confidence while comforting our dogs and cats. Recently these two incredible kids came in to work on their reading skills and provide some company to our shelter pups! 🐶📚

How it works:
• Sign up at hsdayton.org/book-buddies
• Check in at the front desk
• Choose a book or bring your own
• Grab a towel and name tag
• Read aloud to a dog or cat with a parent present. On nice days, enjoy reading outside by the outdoor kennels

💵 A 30-minute session is only $5
💵 For $15 you can upgrade your 30-minute session with a stuffed dog or cat plushie and HSGD bandana (while supplies last)

It doesn’t mean playing.
It never did.
“Socialisation” has a lot to answer for.

It has a far more important meaning, and it’s often missed because of that one word.

It’s not all about interactions with other puppies or dogs. That’s a very small part of it.
Yet we get stuck thinking socialisation = play.

That’s the issue.

Socialisation is the whole world around them.
The one we’re used to. They’re not.

And if we reduce it to just play with other dogs?
Problems are on the way.

Socialisation is about teaching safety.
Creating safety.
Letting your puppy feel safe.

Even if they’ve never seen a plane or heard a crowd, the goal is the same.
Slow, careful exposure so they can take it in without overwhelming them.

We forget, or maybe don’t fully appreciate, how much they need to get used to in our world.

Socialisation is careful, positive exposure.
Acclimation.
And yes, a level of "neutrality".

Wet grass.
Stairs.
Rain on their head.
A cat passing by.
A scooter moving past.

The goal was never just play.

We’ve had an influx of questions lately asking if we sell wolves or wolfdogs. We do not. CWWC does not breed any wolves or wolfdogs. Luna here, our wolfdog, is here to explain why wolves and wolfdogs don’t make good pets. It’s estimated that 80% of privately owned wolves and wolfdogs will never see their third birthday. Often around the age of 2 when they reach maturity, they can become challenging, fearful of new things, destructive, aggressive towards other pets, and sometimes they even have “winter wolf syndrome” in which case they become easily agitated and aggressive. They don’t do well in busy towns, or with new experiences and people. Plus they require extensive fencing, training, and handling skills. Not to mention they’re not legal to have in a lot of places. If you’re really determined to get a wolfdog, do your research, work at a rescue or sanctuary for a few years, and have a solid understanding that they are not like normal dogs and you will have to change your entire life to suit their needs. There are thousands of wolfdogs in rescues that need qualified homes.

It’s a battle ground out there 😮‍💨

Had a run-in with an off lead dog yesterday while we were doing group training.

For context I was working all 5 of my pack together just 2-3 feet from my van in a very unpopulated area adjacent to a paved trail. This handler and his dog had ample opportunity to give us space and chose not to.

This particular dog is a nuisance in this area and is known not to be friendly. This is how we handled the unwanted interaction.

How would you have handled this interaction? Would you have remained confident and calm? What do you think could've gone wrong?
